What kids ever met up in a tavern? Nope, our bold adventurers begin their heroic journey one simple, sunny summer day, enjoying the fresh air and a delicious picnic. But what is a picnic without ants?
Here's what I've been up to all summer. Well, lots of picnics, certainly, with my two boys lil' G (age 7) and lil' L (age 3). And trying to get a game of Pathfinder going with my husband and our friends while having to satisfy my fix diving into this wonderful hobby of papercraft for gaming. The closest I've come this true adventuring has been A Pathfinder Picnic in the Park with lil' G, GMing him as he went through the solo adventure in the Pathfinder Beginner Box, The Skeleton King's Crypt, with help from a couple of paper minis. The combination of my favourite pastimes inspired me to start designing a kid's game which may one day see the light of day. The pictures below show a glimpse into a couple of adventures I've got planned. The ant is Reivaj's Ant Warriors Standard Bearer, shrunk to 67% and de-weaponized so that he doesn't present a threat to Dryw's excellent adventurers. The background is from A Hobbit Companion book, the ground from a Japanese papercraft site modded in Gimp, the greenery from Dungeon Plungin' which I have yet to read the rules for, and the Picnic Mimic, blanket, and log are all mine. The log, in fact, I've already shared in a previous post, and was my first paper mini, made on the fly for that first photo. Supplemental to the entry, a couple of fun details as I play around with Dryw's amazing little adventurers...

I'd not originally planned to include this and my other entry into the Papercuts 2013 contest, but if I don't now, I never will get them done ;D I hope it at least brings a smile to your face, if not admiration for my skill!
Sadly, only camera working is my iPhone, and neither of my printers nor my scanner were in the necessary full working order to assist, so things are a little rough.

However, where do you all get those wonderful trees?

This is great, I really like the idea... However, where do you all get those wonderful trees? Thanks! I will be refining and expanding it over the next few months. I've got a long list of encounter ideas, map-tiles planned out, lots of enthusiasm, and a built-in playtester and fan in my sons. I just finished adding in the proper links to a post at my nascent blog: dungeon-mama.blogspot.ca. I didn't want to keep editing my post out of eligibility You're looking for Oversoul's paper mini terrain, available as free/donation-ware downloads, in particular 2D trees, bushes, rocks & 2.5D trees & bushes. There's lots more where those came from. I hope to get to playing one or more of their games in the next month, and doing up more of their awesome terrain & minis. They are a little cartoony, and slightly pixelated, but they work well enough with the scale and theme here. I've got all of Fat Dragon's overland papercraft terrain sets, but haven't found the time to do up more than campfires & tents, so these little portable trees, etc. are great.

Thanks for those links, Anne. Never ceases to amaze me how many things I've failed to properly investigate on the paper modelling front...
That vegetation is the perfect match for Dryw's figures. If you come across any similar bramble undergrowth or other thorny hedges (roses, etc.), I'd be happy to know about those too!

(Be sure to check all the other terrain links on that Oversoul Games downloads page, it includes palm trees, Japanese cherry trees in blossom, and savannah grasses, among other things.) I think they also go perfectly with Inked Adventures outdoor tiles (all two of them), to give the out-of-doors the same extra-dimensions his 3D doors give his dungeons. I'll have a go at drawing a few of my own one day, but for now these work great. Plus I need to replace my laser toner to print anything to green now... have to wait until I can deplete the other colours as much

Be sure to check all the other terrain links on that Oversoul Games downloads page, it includes palm trees, Japanese cherry trees in blossom, and savannah grasses, among other things. Thanks; yes, I spent quite some time checking out the Oversoul site. Not sure about the berry bushes (I think they're in with the Pygmy game downloads, rather than the general terrain items), as the berries seem to be white, with the intention you can hand-colour them after printout, the same as the pygmy feather adornments. Been handier with colour options done as PDF layers, but I know not everyone's keen on those. From my brief skim so far, the "Dungeon Plungin'" game particularly looks quite fun, and seems well-supported with scenarios, paper figures and terrain. I think they also go perfectly with Inked Adventures outdoor tiles (all two of them), to give the out-of-doors the same extra-dimensions his 3D doors give his dungeons. I think there are a couple more than two Inked Adventures outdoors tiles - though to be fair a forest perhaps isn't going to be helped by the Vexing Sands desert... From memory there's also an outdoor tile in the Modular Dungeon set, with stairs leading down to the main entrance. If you hunt around among Bill Babble's stuff on DeviantArt, there are also a few more outdoorsy bits and pieces, but in a somewhat less "finished" style. I don't seem to have that link still, but there should be one from the Inked Adventures site. I'll have a go at drawing a few of my own one day, but for now these work great. Good luck with that. Maybe in time for next year's Papercuts?

I found your ants at just the right time, inspiring a whole encounter and likely a campaign-long companion (if the adventurers play their cards diplomatically). I looked over all the figures very carefully before choosing this particular ant, the standard-bearer bereft of standard. She was easy to convert to a low threat-level, all she required was a little judicious cutting. I printed her, (her friends), and a sheet of bases at 67% to match the scale of Dryw's child adventurers. You've got a fabulous grass texture, by the way Thanks for creating such a great collection of ant sets*, and for the best basing method for minis I've yet found! *please make a queen & her (peaceful) courtiers/gigolos (I'd say courtesans, but they are males)/larval offspring, should you ever find the time/inclination to further expand the line ;D

Thank you for your kind words . I love your diorama, very original. About the creations of new sets, is becoming increasingly difficult for the little time I'm arranging lately. I wish i can do more ant sets and adventurers: dwarfs, and i promise a friend a group of WW2 US Rangers that i can finish. I´ll try do take some time to come back to the minis. Thanks for your support!!

Hi Anne,
A charming diorama, congratulations! My two lads are older than yours (10 and 'gulp' nearly 15) I tried designing kid friendly versions of rpgs and pre-literate character sheets for them when they were young, but by the time I had the designs working they were ready for more complicated rules so nothing ever ripened. My oldest now DMs a 4e game every week though, so I guess he caught the bug. Bug . . . ants, it all hangs together. Thanks again for your diorama.

My oldest now DMs a 4e game every week though, so I guess he caught the bug. Bug . . . ants, it all hangs together. Thanks again for your diorama. Thanks so much I'm just learning the ropes myself, as I was little older than my son Gabriel when I first&last played tabletop RPGs. Now's the perfect time to experiment with simple and variant rulesets, learning as I go. We (my husband & I, and our best-friend/couple) have been trying to get a D&D game together since New Years' without much luck (kids, life, etc.), so I've been building towards that with edition and ruleset tasting, and a couple of wonderful little tangents like this paper crafting addiction There are lots of kid-friendly rulesets out now, easily accessed through RPGNow, Kickstarter, and even D&D did a mini-version, but frankly the choices get overwhelming when the GM is as new as the players to the hobby. I ran G through the Pathfinder solo adventure (and later my husband, though he got a paper terrain & mini version in the comfort of our dining room), and most of their Beginner Box seems workable for his age and understanding. Of course, he wants to solo a wizard, and shoot fireballs and lightning, so I still have to figure some things out Soon, once school's settled in, G & I will be getting some quiet time together in the afternoons, and it will really start to come together. He's got a terrific imagination, and is excited about our project. Hopefully it's enough to weaken his Angry Birds obsession... a bit.

One story I heard about a group of young kids playing was that when presented with the adventure hook: " You hear stories about a group of ogres living in a cave in the woods outside town" there was a chorus of "NO WAY we are going in THERE!" I guess if you got through the Pathfinder intro you are over that particular hump. Good luck and keep it fun.

I love this scene, and it is good to see someone getting use out of my Child Adventurers. The trees and bushes go well with the rest of the scene, and the giant ant must be terrifying to those poor, young children.
Since Dave Okum just released 2 new sets, I may have to get inspired and start posting a few new things. I do have a lot of scenery and props that match the hand-drawn style of Inked Adventures (which I use a lot of), but I haven't turned much into PDF files. Perhaps I need to post some Imperfect Props.
Anyway, I'm rambling again, so back on track, I love this little scene and hope you are continuing to have fun!

'Fan-boy mode initiated'
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, I'd really love to see any terrain in the imperfect style.
My biggest wish would be the desert town. It really looks good in the photos I've seen.

I was just looking through pavaro's stuff, and he has some scenery that would go along with that style of figures pretty well too.
