To help advertise their latest software upgrade from the "Campaign Cartographer 3" add-on suite, "Character Artist 3", Profantasy Software released a PDF with three pages of "A"-frame fantasy paper minis late yesterday (2013 Dec 18). Anyone can collect it from the "Free Counters for you to download" link on the Character Artist 3 homepage (the download link from that homepage takes you directly to the PDF file page - it's about 3.5 MB in size in case that might be a concern for anyone).
The software's been in development for several years, and it was originally intended CA3 would appear in 2012, but obviously it's been delayed, as these things so often are, hopefully to the software's benefit (which seems a reasonable expectation from my own experience of various of the Profantasy software products over the past couple of years). What I've seen so far is impressive by comparison with the previous Character Artist Pro software, although it seems primarily to be an upgrade in terms of atwork style and design, as the software was already quite robust and readily usable.
It was always possible to create "A"-frame paper minis using the earlier CA software, as well as markers and tokens, so this isn't a new feature, and before anyone gets too excited, you can only create a full front view of a character or monster, not the back, but the program does automatically let you generate a mirrored silhouette for the back of the figure, and it also provides an "A"-frame minis full-page template you can import your CA3 artwork directly into, which is how these free minis have been generated.
As someone with very limited artistic skills in drawing figurines like these, CAPro was a boon to me for preparing illustrations to accompany fantasy RPG scenarios, as well as basic customised paper standees, and I fully expect CA3 will continue that usefulness. But in a more realistic style!
