I'm looking for a good set of Sci-fi rules to use with most of Mels models. I really enjoy GunCrawl, but the vehicle feel more like stand in props and not usable. I want to start expanding my games to include stats for vehicles and such, maybe a bit more in depth character and weapons (I really like using the Terra Force, NCC, and Hybrids). Also looking for something I can house rule/edit to be played solo or on the same team as a friend. I'm not really sure were to start looking, a sci-fi game that's a D&D equivalent would be neat, maybe a all in one PDF style format? Thanks for any help!

Maybe it is worth taking a look at Nuclear Renaissance, given free by Ramshackle Games: www.ramshacklegames.co.uk/nuclear/index.htmlI have not tried playing it yet but I have given a quick read some time ago. It seems to match your expectations in terms of detail, game size and support of vehicles. It works with a basic alternate-activation turn sequence, which might not be hard to adapt for solo or co-op.

The only game i know which support "AI", so can be played co-op or solo is THW Chain Reaction system. The Sci-fi branch is the "5150" line. Is not what i'd call a "light" set of rules: the generation of the unknown enemy forces (sort of "blips", if you know Space Hulk ) and the AI behaviour is dictated in some tables you have to roll on.... I'm not such a fan of tables. But even if it did'nt hit my tastes, I'm not negating that's a good working system, with an original and unique feel (your troops may not be willing to do what your order says ). The best ruleset i have played is "The Battlefield" from Bombshell games. It is light and "not so serious" (it feels more to play a videogame than a real skirmish, which is exatcly the game purpose) and it was wrote for modern.... but really you can just build up your forces for any kind of sci-fi that have no "magic" (mind control, teleports or other strange stuffs). As long your battles are fought primary by rifles, occasinally by claws, the ruleset and the given forces/abilities works and can support vehicles (even walkers) in a nice way. But, no AI.

I agree with Parduz that TWH games take care of the solo and co-op play side of things. 5150 Star Army plays at squad level (with individual minis) and includes vehicles. And there is always the free Chain Reaction to try before you buy.

Are you looking for a miniature wargame or a role-playing game?

I'll definitely have to check a couple of these rules out. They look neat so far! I want to say I'm looking more towards an RPG, basically everyone with there own character/hero, some skills, and custom weapons, and the chance to find loot, but something I can also bend the game rules a bit to play solo or everyone on the same side. I don't mind making roll charts for loot, enemies, and such (like I've done for D&D before lol).

I don't mind making roll charts for loot, enemies, and such (like I've done for D&D before lol). One of my favorites, and unfortunately out of print, is the Alternity series from TSR. A sci-fi D&D can be found in the old Star Frontiers from TSR, or the D20 Modern/Future series from Wizards of the Coast. The D20 platform is highly praised or absolutely hated...but it is widely supported by many sources. The D6 Space offerings from West End Games are not too bad, and are generally found free in PDF format. The earlier release of Star Wars from West End Games was a precursor to the D6 series and is one of my all-time favorites. GURPS from Steve Jackson Games is wonderfully generic and highly regarded in the RPG world, plus it has wide support for sci-fi. Amarillo Design Bureau offers Prime Directive, which is a GURPS compatible rule set and is very "trekish". Anyway, I hope this helps.

Savage worlds looks kinda interesting, I'm also curious to see how ship combat works in the High Space system?
