Gearing up for the next project is the Barracks, a fortified building that should have the look and feel of a miniature castle or keep. The model's base is 10" x 16" with the total height of the tower 11 1/2". It will feature a small courtyard and a couple strategic positions for miniature encounters.

That's huge! And awesome.
BTW, are you going to release floorplans for the Guild? I'd love to use them when I get to finishing my "with interiors" kitbash of that kit...

You know? The backside texture could be "fortified" looking - I can imagine using this barracks as part of the castle wall with the "back" actually as part of the wall... I dunno - I haven't looked at any reference.

That, dear sir, is somewhat incredible. Can you have it ready for Monday, I have a game?

You're getting more & more ambitious with your architecture - I like it very much, jjensen!

After some initial designing and test builds, I decided to give the model an upgrade (like it needed one, right?) With another test build under way, this model is currently over 20 pages!

Awesome looking! Two questions!
1) the additional crenellations, will that be an optional item? So you could do do version, an earlier one and add-in more reinforcement should the area get more dangerous...
2) is this google sketch up? I'm thinking of learning it, as I've got a model in mind that I really want to build, and seeing it in 3D would be helpful. I hear you can combine it with Pepakura? to unfold it...

I'm looking forward to seeing all the new textures come together on this kit. 1) The angle of the north building roof was a little too wide and just looked 'off' to me. Being that this is a 'playset' model kit vs. a single building I wanted to provide more playing area, not to mention the new design makes the Barracks look more fortified. Thus the new changes were not intended to be optional. 2) Yes, the model was designed in Sketch Up. It's a fairly simple program to learn. Pepakura for me is too unreliable. It doesn't translate the folded model parts as smoothly as it should (i.e., it causes 'extra' parts), and it tries to fit everything on 1 page, so you're not getting the true dimensions. It also doesn't label any of the 'unfolded' parts so you would have to guess what goes where. Simply put, I don't use Pepakura. Instead, I translate the dimensions of the model to 2D components in Photoshop where I can lay out the initial pages for a test build. Hope this helps.

Barracks UPDATE: The texturing is coming along well, getting set up for a final build. Here's a couple images for a preview. As you can see, the kit will have several props, including a couple unique designs never done before. In addition, there's an Easter egg somewhere on the model specifically related to Mystic Mountain. If all goes well, the model should be released around 8-15-14. Enjoy the previews!

May I beg you to consider honoring a layout that would put these pieces within the safe cutting area of machine cutters? I get that it's extra overhead to do that, but folks (like me) would be more likely to build this stuff if cutfiles could be made. The great thing is, if you follow a couple simple rules, you don't even have to make the cutfiles - plenty of folks (like me!) would make them for you! If you need help understanding how to best layout the pages to make it safe for machine cutters, drop me a PM and I can share some thoughts and resources.

All my models over the past couple years have been cut file friendly, I simply didn't include the entire image in the previews. Apart from the model base pages of this particular model (due to their size), all others pages have registration marks for cutters.

UPDATE 8-12-14: Due to a scheduling conflict this project has been pushed back a week. That said, here's some eye candy on the final build in the mean time -

UPDATE: T-minus 2 days until the release of the Barracks! This is by far the largest set I've done so far. And to make it even more appealing the kit will include 12, yes 12 props (with some that have never been done before)! Building up the excitement I decided to share a couple of my favorite shots during the final build. Enjoy!
