Playing around with some ideas. Put together a proof of concept 15mm Roman Cohort unit. Would this count as 2d or 3d. Also thinking about the idea of a 30mm regiment represented as 1 mini. i.e 3-4 individuals combined showing a leader, standard barer, drummer and trooper. Has anyone seen anything else out there along these lines

Thanks folks
Rhannon thanks for the links some great inspiration and lots of historic knowledge waiting to be tapped. Wildagreenbough, i never heard of kings of war, looks really cool and think that scale is far better for large battles, 30mm great for rpg and skirmish level but epic battle would need a huge amount of real estate.

Hi, Nice to find you all here. Here`s confirmation about the backs of my paper units: in this case, from left to right, above is a rear view of Spanish Grenadiers, Musketeers, deployed artillery and cavalry. I did consider maybe doing ancients later, - pike phalanxes might be interesting! Anyhow, at the moment I`m making army packs for Waterloo (200th anniversary next June) more Naps are in the pipeline but I may also be doing some later C19th armies too. Looser order troops are possible - I also provide skirmishers in my army packs and they also have their formed reserves too. If you`ve got any questions please feel free to ask, With Best Regards, Mike.

Nice, been a fan of Napoleonics since watching/reading the shapes stories, some 95 rifles should stop to french troops. Guessing ACW would pretty popular as well.

grandmanoeuvre: Someone came to these boards a few years ago desperate for a roman testudo. Seems like a natural fit, if you head in an ancient direction.

Hi cowboyleland, A testudo would probably be the easiest thing to make using my paper blocks - and most infantry is shielded too which simplifies design. Earlier I was musing on open order troops (both mounted and foot), I`ve been thinking that I could do light horse in a similar way to my infantry skirmishers... like this?

Have you ever tried spriting, thinking these wee guys would look well sweet pixeled. 8r sorry don`t understand the term "spiriting".... but pixeled; meaning in close up?
Well no, as I work on them close to, they can be quite loosely drawn, but on reduction they tend to tighten up as images. Its very true that you can get a way with a lot (of inaccuracies) when you work on a small scale But in the first units I designed, I tried to make them look like moving bodies of troops, and the irregular and sketchy nature of them worked well to that effect, but as I have re-worked and used some as templates they have got a little more exacting as time goes by. I should admit that in close up they look rather crude; slight curves in shako tops for instance are stepped and "blocky" looking - but reduced to scale, the image seems to fool us that we are seeing slight curves.
Best Regards,
Mike

Simply its drawing with dots, MS paint or free graphics gale do the job and this style lends its self well to small characters, you can repeat for large rank and file units. But once you learn the various tricks and techniques allows for much greater control of small images. I put this together in less than 10 mins and each dot is a pixel so very small.

I`m making generals right now for Waterloo - French, British, and Prussian brigade, divisional, corps and army general blocks - I`ll be posting some pics of these as soon as I can...
