Hello and welcome to the 2014 Papercuts Showcase! How to play: Make stuff out of paper, take a picture, start a thread in the appropriate part of the Papercuts Showcase boards. Post your picture and a download of the model or miniature. Discuss and enjoy. Original works only. Entries submitted in previous Papercuts are not acceptable. Forum Hoard submissions that have not been entered into a previous Papercuts competition are acceptable. The submission deadline for this year is Monday September 1st, 2014. There will be five categories for submission: 1) Best Single Figure - The design must be original. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, download required. 2) Best Multi-figure - A group of figures. All figures must be original design. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, download required. 3) Best Model kit - terrain, vehicle, building- what have you, a multi-piece kit. Original designs only. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, download required. 4) Papercraft in Action - A pure paper diorama scenic category. Models and miniatures can be from any published or original source. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, no download required. 5) Mixed Media Presentation - Papercraft must feature prominently in this categories entries, but can also feature elements from other mediums; metal or resin minis and models for example. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, no download required. 6) BEST IN SHOW - The one entry that says Papercuts 2014 to you. This category will be assembled from all of the other entries in the other categories. One entry per participant per category. Prizes will be in the form of gift-certificates to One Book Shelf. The sponsors have spoken and the prize amounts are as follows; Single Figure1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Multi-Figure1st $50.00 2nd $35.00 3rd $20.00 Model1st $30.00 2nd $20.00 3rd $10.00 Papercraft in Action [Pure Paper]1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Papercraft in Action [Mixed-Media]1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Best in Show: $30.00 Brave Adventures is helping to sponsor the Papecraft in Action category, be sure to check out their great works at www.braveadventures.com/Submissions will be in the form of photographs of your figures and models as well as a free download of the entry. I recommend services such as Dropbox for the download and for the image hosting. Create a new submission between now and the deadline; 09/01/2014. Judging will be determined 100% by forum member voting. Photography is a factor due to the fact that if we can't see it well, it will affect the scoring. Modifying the presentation image for lighting and sharpness is acceptable, just don't add embellishments to the presentatin picture that are not present in the finished model or miniature. Likewise make sure it is easy to download your model or miniature submission. Rules of entry subject to change. Check back periodically for updates. Have fun with creating your submissions, and Good Luck!

I've read this and read it again. I don't see a limit on number of submissions in a category. Is it one submission per category?

3) Best Model kit - terrain, vehicle, building- what have you, a multi-piece kit. Original designs only. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, download required. I need 'original designs' explained further - by 'design', are you referring to the textures used, or to the design of the model kit itself? Or both?

We would like to donate an additional $20 OBS gift certificate to the Papercraft in Action category. I would like to accept your $20. I'll talk to you about it at contest's end, thanks. 3) Best Model kit - terrain, vehicle, building- what have you, a multi-piece kit. Original designs only. Three pictures maximum to show off your work, download required. I need 'original designs' explained further - by 'design', are you referring to the textures used, or to the design of the model kit itself? Or both? Both. Re-skinning someone else's model with original textures doesn't work. You can pull textures and modify them for use from sites like www.cgtextures.com/ as long as you give credit; "Some textures in this model were used with permission from www.cgtextures.com/" Peeling somebody else's texture work off of a finished model somewhere also wouldn't fly. I've read this and read it again. I don't see a limit on number of submissions in a category. Is it one submission per category? Hmm, thought I put that in there; it should be one entry per participant per category, that would be a max of five entries if someone submitted an entry in every category.

I knew that was how it went last year, and I think that you said that in another post. Thanks for the clarification

I knew that was how it went last year, and I think that you said that in another post. Thanks for the clarification Your welcome! Here's an example of a "Papercraft in Action" dioramic setup; I would need to crop out the messy worktable behind the models so that the focus is on the models and not on the tie-dye butterfly drapes. The lighting is not very good, it's all from the top and back and the detail in the foreground is muddy because of that. Unfortunatley I added a word balloon in Photoshop so it's no longer a pure paper entry. The emphasis of the diorama categories should be on how well you built your pieces and presented them. Then I'd need to add model sources; Miniatures by Okumarts and Squirmydad, models by Squirmydad and Worldworks Games, ground tiles by Fat Dragon Games. No download required and the diorama does not have to be made up of pieces that you personally designed. If I swapped in my plastic samurai from Wargames Factory this would instead be an entry for the Mixed Media diorama category.

I have a question. In the past (or at least the last time I submitted something), it was something that was either released, or would be released within a certain time frame.
I wanted to submit a few projects that I am working on, or have released, but if I am reading this correctly, all miniatures ans miniature sets have to have a free download on them?
That kind of puts a damper on things if I have to give them away, being a publisher and all. I have no problem with submitting things, and having a link associated with them, but being forced to give things away is a bit much in my opinion.
I know that this is a great community forum, and many things were free (like the Monthly Hordes) and Jim's original pieces were, as well. Now the sets are being sold again. Not really an "Apples to Oranges" comparison, in my opinion.
I guess my only thought is to wait until the 31st, post them and change the price to FREE, and change it back on the first.
Just my thoughts. If you want to blast me, or tell me what a jerk I am, please send me a PM privately, and keep this post on the correct path.
Thanks for your attention.

Yes, the free download is mandatory. The entries will be going to a Gallery page with pics and downloads so the public can enjoy Papercuts entries for years to come. You could always just take a picture of your models and miniatures in action and enter the photos in one of the dioramic categories. No download required there. Quick question, can you use the same minis in both dioramas and multi figures ?. 8rad That works and I'll allow it. The group category does require a download and the emphasis of the photo associated with the entry should be on the group itself. Using the same minis as part of a dioramic scene allows them to be seen in context with scenic items or other minis. Good questions all.

I was planning on doing that. I also was thinking about doing a free set of figures as a "bonus" for the new set coming out. This sounds like a GREAT set to submit.

I'm working on my entry and had an idea, but the rules don't currently cover it. In short: would an image similar the following be legal/allowed? A short (<2 seconds) animated gif taken from a fixed position to demonstrate some auto-dynamic element. In the example case, a flickering light. Another example would be a turning windmill, etc. "NO ANIMATION" is a completely reasonable answer, BTW.

I have another question along the same lines as kiladecus: is it ok if said free download of a given submission is also made available as a giveaway model by the publisher her-/himself at his site/OBS/whathavewe?

Hey squirmydad, just a quick follow up to the query about availability post-Papercuts; the models I will be submitting will eventually be included in a new tabletop game, so are they still ok for this competition?

Hey squirmydad, just a quick follow up to the query about availability post-Papercuts; the models I will be submitting will eventually be included in a new tabletop game, so are they still ok for this competition? Yes. However, bear in mind that once they are uploaded here I will be gathering the submissions and creating a downloads gallery at onemonk.com just like I do for the Hoard submissions. So putting up an entry for a limited time download just to be an entry then removing the download post-showcase would not be acceptable. I've updated the first post with the monetary prize awards for each category but here they are again; The sponsors have spoken and the prize amounts are as follows; Single Figure1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Multi-Figure1st $50.00 2nd $35.00 3rd $20.00 Model1st $30.00 2nd $20.00 3rd $10.00 Papercraft in Action [Pure Paper]1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Papercraft in Action [Mixed-Media]1st $20.00 2nd $10.00 3rd $5.00 Best in Show: $30.00

I know I posted it on the other thread, but thought it might be worth sharing on the main contest thread. As we come up to judging this contest, please remember what Ryan Macklin said in: Another's Accolades Aren't Your Competition: He makes these three requests: I echo his sentiments. There's as many tastes in papercraft figures and terrain as there are people who make and use it!

To paraphrase Mesper: Three opinions in two responses.
Frankly I find it amazing that the designers don't kick us to the curb sometimes. They do an excellent job of putting up with us.
Likewise in judging the contest, there are even changing tastes from day-to-day with any given member of the forum.
By getting your project together in the proper time frame within the guidelines, you all are head and shoulders above me.
Thanks

Eloquently stated. Thank you for sharing that.
My wife and I love all of the singing/talent shows that we watch almost nightly here in the U.S. While I will never be on Dancing With the Stars, I see this as close as I will ever come to a reality competition.
I can say that the PaperCut Awards are great fun, and really succeed at what they are intended to do: showcase talent, generate interest and allow others the opportunity to see what we already know, that Papercraft gaming is a great hobby!
I can say that even though I have models or figures mine are competing against, we are all brother-in-arms. I know that the voting is fair, and the people voting get it right.
I am excited to be in this competition, and I feel that the real winners are the individuals that come here, download great figures and models, and have the greatest gaming experience available.
I see the pictures in the paper and mixed categories, and I am overwhelmed at the potential that we have as gamers. Everyone's contributions to this hobby (or sport) makes it all the more fun.
I am excited to hear the results, and want to thank everyone here for the opportunity to submit some of my figures.
Best of luck to everyone! This year has shown some great talent!

+I second that! Well... recently received this (e-mail from OBS/RPGnow): " Hey Gang, it's me, <...>, founder of <...>! What a month this has been! We have had THREE sets nominated for the 2014 PAPERCUT AWARDS
" So submitted or nominated? Hmm vide OSCAR / GRAMMY / EMMY or any similar awards we can/are supposed to vote ONLY for NOMINEES, right?
