Looking for some Flying Sword minis, there on page 20 of the D&D 5e MM under animated objects. Thinking it would be fun to have a few of these pop up in some dungeons and surprise some of my players lol.

Are they like Excalibur in The Librarian?

Not sure lol (I fell like that's something I need to watch now lol), basically enchanted Swords that when the heroes come too close they hover and attack until destroyed lol.

I love the idea! There are a lot of examples of swooshing bases to support a sword in action... It'd be fun to put together a whole bunch of different sword (or other weapons, for that matter)!

Lol yeah, I love the idea of the adventures entering a dimly lit dungeon room and seeing a couple of rusty weapon racks knocked over with old Swords and such scattered about and thinking it just an old armory room that no one has clearly been in in ages and then out no where the weapons faintly glow and then fly towards the heroes catching them by surprise.

Squirmydad: Thanks a ton, those are perfect and epic, my Adventures won't know what hit them hahaha! Migibb: Those are pretty awesome looking, I just wish they were set up like the Minis here with black borders to cut them out lol.

Marshall has updated his style to allow you to turn on/off borders, as well as giving Patreon supporters stuff like backs etc. Prior to that, I just added them by hand once I had cut the minis... Not so easy with these ones (probably why I've not printed this set off yet!)

Like those minis squirmydad. Some complete - that is, without blade notches - would be good too, and maybe some in a more combative pose. They're capable of fighting on their own magically, after all. For anyone who can bear to use A-frame minis, the old Steve Jackson Games Cardboard Heroes sets included a selection of such items, called there "living weapons" (swords and more). They're long out of print (I have the original printed sets), but remain available as paid-for downloads via the Warehouse 23 website. Set 7 is the one with the living weapons in it, from the description. Irritatingly, there are no sample images available to show you what you'll be getting, but the printed originals were in full colour, and beautifully drawn in an anatomically naturalistic manner (so no oversized heads and hands on the humans, for instance). Set 10 may be worth investigating too, as it seems likely the one that has the flat counters, which included various weapons (treasure items), and you can use those as flying weapons as well, when taking a rest, or home-mounted as standee minis. I needed a variety of different animated weapons and armour earlier this year, so scanned some of these original printed minis then, and ran off a series as new minis, flipping left for right, up for down, or adjusted the angles the weapons were at, and so forth, for variety. Great thing about weapons of course is that for most, it's easy to simply use a mirrored back image and still have that be believable (I added a coloured gem in the hilt of a couple of swords on one side only to indicate facing before printing some off, for instance). So, you can easily make your own for personal use by hunting down fantasy weapon art online and creating your own minis on the computer, with minimal extra work, beyond correctly scaling them. I found some nice swords on DeviantArt and used them, for example, but - naturally - cannot now recall exactly where they came from... However, a quick search for "fantasy sword art images" came up with entire realms of ideas, so worth a hunt if this is of interest.

Something like these? linkYou wouldn't happen to have a PDF version would you, if not it's ok! If you NEED a PDF, try following one of my guides to making PDFs with free software. OpenOffice will be super easy. Scribus is a little harder. I'm sure there is a way to do it from gimp. There's also PDF printers (like CutePDF) that you could print to. Give it a try, and it might give you some new tools to work with in a pinch.

Out of curiosity, any minis that aren't PDF files that I make into PDF files with one of the above methods, will they stay to scale when printed?

Something like these? linkThose are nice, especially to print on paper or cardstock. However, I once took a different approach: A friend of mine was in need of a mini for one of the spells that you can enchant a wizard's staff with in The Dark EYE, the flaming sword spell. It basically turns your staff into a flaming sword that hovers and can be controlled from a certain (safe) distance. I basically ended up with a sword like the one above, but without the flying stand and with varying flames for the front and back. I then printed the mini on a sheet of overhead transparency, cut it out, and built it. In the end, it had a very nice effect of depth to it, was partially shie through and looked totally awesome on the gaming table.

When you finish your image as you want it, just hit CTRL+SHIFT+E for Export file as... and then go through the save process as you would any other file.
