I think that these could work in just about any setting actually. If you put the right textures on the walls, you could have postapoc, sci-fi, fantasy, even modern and steampunk. It all depends on the textures and the accessories you place on the walls. Looking great!!!

I will be focusing on the barbarian, orc, stone age textures for now but I also thought esp. with the 3D columns on the side it should make some great sci-fi buildings.

A first try of texturing the roof. Here in the simple tent variant. I wanted to have the base texture be without the spiked poles. And to spice it up I added the simple pole endings coming out from under the roof, like it would in a tent I guess. Not everybody will want the spikes The colors came out way too dark. I have not had this big color mismatch from screen to printer. Maybe I do have to look in to some color calibration. Or switch from RGB to CMYK in Illustrator.

Well, maybe this one is either for the Dark Orcs or the start of the burned out version. I don't know why sometimes things come out way darker than the screen image

That was a first for me. Usually they are matching perfectly. But I have used a new approach to layer layering. Maybe that is the reason. Will have to do some tests...
But I will have so many color options, it should be no problem to find the right level for the end user in any case.

Awesome! I can't wait until they are available. Double awesome But hold your horses for a little while more. I think I got all the unfolds already done, but will need a little more time to get all the textures right ... BTW I updated my site with a new page about the white prototypes in case you want to hop over ( www.papierschnitzel.com/orc-village-prototypes/

After some hiccups I was able to finish my first try on the leather texture. The reason for the color mismatch seemed to be the angle of the monitor. When I slant it at pretty much 90° towards my viewing angle the colors match perfectly again. Not sure why it only showed now but I don't care really as long as I am able to make it work again :-) So the final texture looks like this now. I have again made a little post on my site talking about the process. I am starting to like this approach more as I only have to post pics on one site! Distributing my pics on multiple sites took so much time!!! How do you like the result? Am I missing something leathery? I thought for a more worn look I might add some sewn on patches or sown tear lines ...

I'm really looking forward to these. Everyone should click over to the papierschnitzel site and check out the WIP pics.
BTW, have you considered doing a wood or bark version, like a Native American hogan or wigwam? The general shape of your buildings seems appropriate for a hogan, so it would "just" be a matter of adding a texture. <He says, ducking the wireless mouse you're throwing at him virtually...>

I still think that this could easily be three sets. Nothing wrong with that at all.

But have not looked at what they look like. I have heard alot about the bark wigwams and canoes of Native Americans. Sounds amazing what they were able to build with such a fragile material. It sounds very fitting for the forrest version hut of "my" wild peoples. With the current one I am looking into the desert/savannah version.

I still think that this could easily be three sets. Nothing wrong with that at all. To me that is a matter of pricing. If I make it one more expensive product it could have all the variations in it. I could also make a couple of low priced products with the different color/texture schemes (desert, forrest, snow? scifi? ...) I would prefer that approach a) because I don't have to wait so long until I release and b) I have the feeling that smaller price is more attractive.

From a consumer standpoint, multiple products that are reskins of the same model have the advantage of letting you buy exactly the version you need, which is good. It also means that the versions can come out on separate schedules, so that the whole set isn't held up waiting for the last skin to be ready. So, sure...do it as multiple, genre-focused sets, that sounds good to me. (For what it's worth, I suspect that there would be the most demand for the WoWiest version of orc architecture you can manage without violating anyone's copyright...so that should probably be the first priority, from a sales standpoint.)

(For what it's worth, I suspect that there would be the most demand for the WoWiest version of orc architecture you can manage without violating anyone's copyright...so that should probably be the first priority, from a sales standpoint.) The only "fear" I have with this pricing approach is that clients might think I am trying to rip them off. But to be honest, textures are what take up most of the time. So this would fit my "valuation" of my work best. Thanks for the feedback. About the "Wowiest" version ... I have had a long hard look at the WoW game architecture and I find, that as much as it looks great and fitting in the game I don't see it working on a gaming table. There are just too many "crazy" things going on architecture wise for one ... and another issue is that the textures look great from your characters view point (which is very close to his surroundings, therefore the textures have a lot of detail). From a gamers PoV standing "above" the action of the table you need a different texture detail scale. Also, as much as I would love to be able to do that (ability not legaly) I am not yet at the stage of producing the artsy cartoon style. If someone wants the WoW buildings, the easiest (not sure how legal that is, but I have seen it on the net so ...) is to extract them from the game files (3D meshes, textures) and just make your own papermodel. I am trying to make some options, like the crazy tusks/bones and some classic color variations (wow orcs often have red roofs) as addons that will cater to that crowd but also want it to be useful for non-WoW interested. If all goes well I can always ask Blizzard what they think about making true WOW papermodels. Probably have to pay a fee of some sort. But for now I'll just try to make my own thing

Maybe my WoW reference came across too strong. The tusk/bone versions you've already shown in your development are just fine for this purpose--I didn't mean to recommend anything more than being sure those textures were in the first version you release. They certainly say "orc" loudly enough for any tabletop roleplayer to know that's what they are, without being too derivative. Just keep going as you are, and they'll be great.

just wanted to make sure I am not raising any false hopes i am not sure what they are yet, but i can imagine some of the iconic buildings of that game would make a great paper model one day. I'll give it a try maybe when I do another free model ... it is a really fun experience delving into this fantasy realm architecture thing and exploring own and others ideas about how such buildings could look like. however what I realized is that no matter how exotic and alien you design a building to be, in the end it still has to be grounded in human architecture history (and maybe something from the animal kingdom) because that is what we recognize. it's like most aliens races somehow end up being humanoid/biped versions with maybe insect eyes or tentacles but still basically are human.

Form mostly follows function. Dwellings get built to moderate the environment. There are shapes that are going to do that well and others that won't work at all. Mix in the limitations of the available materials and rational beings are going to end up with the same solutions, with some variation for culture and fashion.

Why not release the tents separate from the huts? I'd even suggest offering a scaled-down version (or at least just giving the instructions for what percentage to print at) for goblin tents.

I am working on getting the small huts (I am assuming this is what you meant with tents) finished. The leather textures look good now. Starting on entrance, roof top and ground base/tile ... I have no idea what the scale-down factor would be for goblins The interior space for the small hut now is 6x1" bases in hex shape. The height is apx 6cm. I will try to post pics with my old LOTR goblins figures. Maybe that will help.

Found them goblins! It's the old GW LOTR moria goblins. I added some small dwarves and then some regular size humans. I guess you could leave the goblins captain hut at this size and make a couple of others smaller for the regular goblin tents?

I am focusing now on getting the small huts ready. I have made some great progress with details on the leather texture. Have a look at the evolution of my leather texture. It doesn't look that "illustrated" (although you can still do that if you turn the dirt off) and it is now very easy for me to add color and shade variations ...

Today some variations. My options: with and without dirt, darker and lighter, saturated and desaturated and ... red! I think green could also look nice. the one on the right without the dirt layer looks more illustrated style. the others with the dirt look more real.

Dude these are SOOOO awesome, can't wait to pick them up! I think a flaming tent would also be quite nice, though most wouldn't use them unless they're gamers.

[quote author=" marzman" source="/post/82355/thread" I think a flaming tent would also be quite nice, though most wouldn't use them unless they're gamers.[/quote] I think the way to go on this would be to make flames with bases that matches the curve of the walls and hook into the hole in the roof.
