Over in my Vintage thread, I pointed out the Allers Familie-Journal models archived at Pacific Lutheran University. The sister publication is Illustreret Familie-Journal. A number of those models are archived at www.flickr.com/photos/esbenr/I'm not feeling well today, but I can do some file clean-up and color adjustment. One of the first models that really intrigued me was the HCM set, Vindues-Dekoration, a set of window sill models. Only, I didn't have the skill back then to bring them back to life. Played with them a bit today Not sure when I will ever build them, but they could be an interesting village backdrop. There is also the Guldkaret, the Gold Coach. This blasted thing is all over the internet, and some have even done clean-ups and repaints, but they all have the hand-written 1923 at the top, which means they all came from the same file. As I mentioned elsewhere, when cleaning these up, you have to be careful not to go too far or do too much, or work too quickly. Here's where I'm at I'd like to turn this into a coach with mirrored sides, outside/inside, and then a central piece with traditional tabs, re-size it and then recolor to something not so regal and garish Lose a lot of the ornamentation and make it white, and it could be turned into George Washington's Coach from his first inauguration I actually have a very nice illustration of his coach in the book Pictorial History of American Presidents by John and Alice Durant

I sized this to match Greywolf's Medieval Carriage I probably won't do any recolors, unless someone asks for something Well, maybe in 'cream', but to match Washington's coach, I would need to change the side windows. Not tonight

When I was working on the cream colored coach, I realized that on the interior faces, I need to have the frame in front of the wheels, so that file is not ready to go just yet
EDIT-- maybe it isn't necessary. The way the center section is done, it may cover up all that, but I'll play with it tonight

Needs tweaked. Needs some sort of fore-carriage. Some of the parts need adjusting, but not too bad

I adjusted the center for fit last night. Used the measure tool to figure out lengths and changing that many, there may be errors creeping in, I think a simple one piece fore-carriage should take care of that void.

Well, over lunch, I was going through my files looking for an example of a forecarriage. I seem to remember a build of the fort from Seite 42 (the Disney vintage site), but evidently, it was a custom build. But I did find this photo (if you can find the model somewhere, point me in the right direction) Omitting the long post, I think I can come up with a little box with dangly bits to glue into the front. This might actually turn into a decent model

I need to go to the Wagenburg in Schloss Schönbrunn an get some inspiration on a nice carriage. Love these builds!

When I was in Vienna, it was on one of those 29 countries in 49 days trips. We went to Schönbrunn Palace, but we hiked out to the fountain, and missed the Wagon Museum BTW -- webinar this afternoon, so I worked on the carriages. Stole a lot of ideas and some textures from the photo above and designed a fore-carriage piece. I broke up the long center strip, because it is an absolute pain to glue. Now there is a cabin piece and two end pieces. I also added extra wheels for layering

You had to come up with some more coaches, even though you know that is my addiction! Seriously, thanks for the vintage models. I think that I WILL have to work that White coach in the diorama somehow.

Last night, I went back to an old Illustreret Familie-Journal model. Originally a wall hanging to frame a mirror or picture frame Want to just turn this into a bridge with Tori gates, lanterns and trellises. Did a lot of clean up on it last night and color adjustment. As designed it is designed to be viewed from only one side, so the bridge sides, gates, people and trellises need to be two-sided for the bridge. With Japanese Mythos being the current Hoard theme, I thought this could cover a couple itches

That is a great idea! Looking forward to seeing the final result. And I thank you again for the coach. I AM using it in the Inn diorama and have some of the detailing worked out.

Hmmm, never posted where I was at on the clean up
Nevermind ... I am working with a huge png too large to post, I think. It's 28 MB
3161 X 4409. I hear people talk about how much easier it is to work with large images, but at least on this one, I don't find it as easy. It captures more variations, so one has to fix a whole lot more stuff, like the red has many variations of red, and it always seems like you go back and see single-pixel things that have to be fixed again. Just an observation

I spent the last hour working on the outlines and other black markings of the bridge/ tori portions. They were atrocious. Got rid of a lot more of the bleed-through, also And exported as a jpg, so I can show where I am at I like the yellow wood from the bridge floor, but the yellow stonework could be limestone, but I think I need to tone it down

I think I am ready to test this out tonight. I did tone down the yellow from the stone. I thought it odd that side F has end posts, but side D doesn't, so I fixed that Bridge sides are two-sided. The ladies are closer to scale. Got rid of a bunch of the dashed lines that really take away from overall appearance. All the bridge parts are reduced to 85%. The ladies reduced much more, and also widened a bit to look more like minis than toothpicks. The trellises on page 3 are a nod to the original design as a wall decoration. They were extensions of the base that this sits on, so no attachment points to the pieces I am using. I think I am just going to use a couple One Monk bases to hold them upright, and I had to make them two-sided. I don't really think they will enhance the project, but I figured I would trust the designer. EDIT-- I had left some of the mystery tabs on there, not being 100% sure of the construction, and I think it is going to help things to be more solid. The tabs on Part D's fence will sandwich between the tori layers. Pleasant surprise

Had a chance to work on this at lunch and a bit more after work Confession time. On the back part (the one with the fence), In the original, there were no posts on either end of the bridge, so I added them after I did the mirrored part. I should have done the mirroring AFTER I added the posts, and then fixed the rails, etc. They are off. Also, there is an exposed tab location. I just blackened it in, but I'm going to fix it on the files. I hadn't seen Kathy in a month and when I told her about this, she said that if it turns out well, I should know what to get her for her birthday. My buddy Mike was also interested, so I might have to make two more. I'm thinking about replacing the trellises with a couple of cherry trees in blossom.

After gluing the tab to the front of the tori on each end, the backs are glued and then glued to the base. Time for the step on each end, the two lamps and the trellises. Oh, and the little ladies

I certainly appreciate the frequent updates and pictures. My nights are frequently boring, and these pists provide a bit of distraction from my existential dread

VK,
You never cease to amaze. You took an ancient relic, that I would have just passed over without a second glance, and turned it into something useful. So useful, that I am going to reduce it in scale and add it to the formal garden diorama that I gave my granddaughter when she entered middle school. There is a side yard in the diorama that is just grass; I could not figure out what to put there. Now I have the answer. I will work on this later in the summer and, with your permission, post a photo of the finished product here. Thanks again for the great idea!

Certainly.
When I make changes on these old models, I generally post the files, on the off-chance that someone might want to build it

Well, three days of being through the wringer at the part-time job the last three nights left me hurting, worn out and not really able to concentrate much. When I did my back ups, I noticed just how decimated my Familie Journal files were, so I worked on rebuilding them today. Just didn't feel like doing anything that required much thought.
My neighbor is now in an Assisted Living Facility. At 10:30 last night I noticed a flashlight beam moving around in her kitchen, heard the side door of her garage being closed and a flashlight beam moving around in there. Being the stupid person I sometimes am, I asked them if they needed more light to find what they were after, even though I really couldn't see them. I'd already called 911, but after 15 minutes, I had given up on them showing. They took off through the back yard of the next house down and took off in a dark pickup with no lights on. And then the police arrived.
The guys came back with their truck at 12:30 and they took off before the police arrived, but I got a better description of the truck for them.
Hopefully I will have a better night tonight.

I thought the buildings I was looking for was at www.plu.edu/archives/allers-familie-journal/ , but I've gone through all the issues and the closest I got was the blockhus. Razzum frazzum But my library is somewhat back to where it was and there are a couple little projects I would really like to try out I need to go back to the Esben Rasmussen Flickr site and try to fill in some gaps. One issue there is that Date/Volume/Number/Title info is not kept track of well and I would really like to keep things organized with that info. For example, I have this in my libary If one wanted to save this, the file name tells you that it is the Maurisk Port from volume 44, issue number 26, published June 30, 1920. A lot of the files you find on Flickr, Pintrest, etc. doesn't have that info

One thing I need to keep in mind on these is that I am sizing them for Letter, 8 1/2 inches X 11 inches. Original size are 26.8 cm wide x 37.38 cm high which is around 10.5 inches x 14.75 inches I thought I might make a mask for my grandson (the little monkey), but I guess it will just sit on a shelf. I'm not sure it would fit him even if I enlarged to 11 X 17

One thing I noticed and hoped it wouldn't be as noticeable as it is, the two sides have a horrible color mismatch. EDIT -- I just took the top 'side' and flipped and rotated to paste over the other side I'll probably do the same thing with your enlarged version, cowboylelandEDIT #2 -- Only, I hadn't counted on the mouth section not being large enough. Strange that the forehead and nose portions fit just fine, but there is no way that mouth and chin section can fit the opening. Time to do surgery on this fellow
