The theme for this month's HOARD is Medieval Superheroes This can be any sort of miniature figure or model on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your entries, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of April, 2018. This is where I usually throw some ideas out there, but frankly, I don't have a good handle on this one. Somebody give me some ideas. Help!

Hmm.. I'm thinking maybe remixes of existing heroes reimagined as medieval characters? Interesting... That is what I was thinking. Trying to figure out what can be reimagined smoothly is the hard part. Would I be wrong in picturing most of the typical superheroes being 'Powerful Magic-users with High Strength'? Or a new character that comes from somewhere else. Like the show Kung Fu or Zorro. One thing I learned this week is that there were many tales of Samurai Warrior Priests. So, something like 'Shogun' as a superhero in Europe, operating as a super-high-level cleric with special skills and weapons. Dunno

It's an interesting concept for sure. I ran a playtest for a superhero system I abandoned a few years back where Marvel hero and villains were reimagined in the wild west.

I feel responsable for this madness so I will throw some ideas around: The easy one that springs to mind is Green Arrow, almost too easy. Green Lantern could be a thing. Flash? Ironman would be full plate with a magic gem on his chest? How different could Superman be? There are some interesting ideas at www.sillof.com

I'm leaning towards 'enhanced' existing figures. Like in the shoutbox, Robin Hood as an enhanced figure.
After the Japanese month, I had mentioned a samurai in medieval Europe type thing, but I think a Chinese warrior might be more interesting with some of the interesting feudal era weapons -- paper armor, the silk cloaks that repel arrows, rocket-powered armaments, repeater-crossbows, etc. They had a lot of cool stuff that wasn't matched for centuries

Kurt Busiek and George Perez did a medieval Avengers storyline with the characters re-imagined for the era. It was a cool and unique concept.

Instead of working on a Mickey Mouse figure for my girlfriend, I've been wading through a bunch of Marvel and DC medieval superhero material. Interesting, but if I do anything this month, I'm going the route of medieval or renaissance larger than life characters framed as superheroes. Arthurian legends, Robin Hood, even some of the beatified saints could easily be nudged up to superhero status. If DaVinci were athletic, he could easily be a superhero. Maybe he could be anyway. I probably shouldn't have said 'beatified saints', but they came to mind. Persian, Arabian, Indic, East Asian legends could also fit.

In my research, I saw an image of a cosplay participant wearing a stormtrooper outfit, painted up in Snow White colors. She was holding the helmet and had the Snow White hairstyle, etc. I would think Iron Man livery on a traditional knight would fit the bill. Maybe just a huge gem in his chest ... hmmm

the Sillof site I linked above got me thinking that this concept works best as sets so I started working on a viking archer as Robin and thought about Batgirl as a shield maiden. Robin is not working out and I now realise I have quite a lot of building to do for my semi-annual, off-season, gaming at the cottage extravaganza. I don't know if I will get back to this hoard or not.
My son pointed out that Captain America has a round shield and wings on the side of his head so would be super easy to turn viking, if anyone is looking for more inspiration. Since the vikings were probably the first Europeans in America, it kind of makes sense. Of, course he should then be Captain Vinland.

So, I got talked out of my pirate game for the cottage, there really isn`t enough floor space, so I was a bit at loose ends and went back to Robin. For some reason I couldn`t get stopped. Now it is twenty minutes to four AM but I think he is done. Edit: I knew I was too tired to be posting. I went back and re-shaded the back view of his right arm, that needed doing. I added a fold to the back of his cape because I am trying to learn to do that. Here is the update:

I particularly like how the cape becomes a dark age hood and cape/cloak.

That is something I stole. There are a few pictures of Robin in a hood around. Apparently some guy named "Timothy Drake" took over the Robin identity when johnny-o Grayson became Batman? I don't know, but when a character has been appearing monthly for nearly eighty years and the only limitation is what can be drawn, you have to figure they have tried nearly everything. I should be doing something productive today but I can't help thinking about Batgirl... Edit: I just noticed that the censorship program changed the standard nick-name for "Richard" that starts with "D" and rhymes with "thick" to "johnny-o." Rest assured that I know Mr Grayson's preferred name.

Barbarian Bondage-Fetish Batgirl? I have not looked, but I am sure there are enough of those on the internet already. Well, really, one is more than enough, but Batgirl wouldn't be Batgirl without a tight shiny suit.

So I know that I said they probably tried everything, but aside from some cos-play versions using grease paint I have not found any examples of incorporating the bat logo into the mask. Here is a Batgirl WIP Edit: the thumbnail looks more pixilated than my original, but postimage wont let me see it large and is pointing me at a site for adult images. I wonder if some bot "heard" the "bondage-fetish" comment and now they think the shield is a huge breast.

gypsy dancer batgirl? Not so flouncy, but tight to the hips, and a gypsy skirt? Mask, heeled boots, etc. I think would work. Batgirl masked River Tam with a bat logo on her chest and gypsy skirt maybe?

I still like my Ronin character, but I doubt it is going anywhere or would be really fitting with the genre.
A ronin is a samurai who no longer has a master, whether released or the master died. After his master's death, he was banished, working as a mercenary in Indo-China and China, eventually making his way to Europe, picking up new skills and weapons along the way.
I've been working from woodblock prints to get appropriate armor, weapons, etc. Playing with proportions to make him more superhero-like. The prints though are not so helpful. They generally are fighting hand-to-hand in a jumble or are in a mass of warriors or seated. I really don't understand why so many of these images have the samurai sitting on stools. Maybe the armor is heavy. Sometimes they are on horseback. Rarely are they depicted at the onset of attack, which is what I'd like to portray
I guess what I'm saying is that I think he would be a character I would like to play, but I doubt he will be in this hoard

Less, than a week to go on this. I thought it unusual enough that there would be more submissions. Possibly folks were like me and their ideas stalled
