I'm looking for paper minis suitable for an Adventures in Middle-Earth game. I'm not inclined to DIY, I'd rather purchase them (but I posted on this thread because I couldn't find any more suitable one).
I looked on drivethrurpg, but there doesn't seem to be a way of checking the visuals before purchasing, which kind of sucks.
I need heroes and bestiary, obviously: humans, elves, dwarves, hobbits, orcs, giant spiders, trolls, undead, wargs, giant bats, etc.
A problem I have is that what I could find so far looks cartoonish. I'm looking for something more scary (think Lord of the Rings movie).
I'm looking for something simple, like the "figure flats" provided with most Savage Worlds settings.
Most grateful for any help!

'Search' should be your best friend on this forum. Look up any of those topics and you should find pages of possibilities to fill the void.

Thanks! I did some searching, but as you just said: PAGES of possibilities. I thought if someone is also DM'ing in Middle-Earth (s)he might point me in the right direction. Pathfinder pawns seem interesting, for instance.

If you can source copies of the defunct magazine Battle Games in Middle Earth (published by De Agostini in conjunction with Games Workshop between 2002 and 2006), several issues of that included some basic A-frame paper minis. These essentially consisted of a colour image of a painted mini from the GW 3D cast metal LotR ranges (both sides were of the same image so they had no real backs) set in a suitable frame to be cut out and made up. According to this blog listing, 12 of the 91 issues included some of these pre-printed card minis, though I'm not sure how accurate this may be, as I also came across an old forum posting here which suggests the card minis were in at least 26 issues instead. The GW minis were based on the Peter Jackson movies.

If you don't mind paying then drivethruRPG has all kinds of fantasy paper figures in all kinds of styles. There is a similar variety here but not quite the selection.

I just had a look at the downloads section: lots of great stuff, including minis which would make good Easterlings or Southrons! Pity that the content is not grouped by theme or tagged, though (or maybe I missed that?).

I'm surprised that most RPG game publishers don't seem to offer paper minis, except Pinnacle (Savage Worlds) and a couple others.

pmiranda: There are a few issues of BGiME available as PDFs online if you hunt around. I won't give links to what I chanced-upon, as I'm not sure about the legalities involved. You can also find images, including some free, illustrated, PDF download rules on the Games Workshop site, which include shots of some individual minis, which you could always reuse to make your own A-frame minis, perhaps, though I appreciate your aversion to DIY in this.

Monster Stand-Ins (Paper Minis) From Inkwell Ideas look like a good and inexpensive option. Endless Realms seems like a nice set too. Any suggestions on basing these standees, though?
The Pathfinder Pawns: Bestiary series of boxes look cool too... and include bases! It's another price range, though. Of course, I could just buy the Pathfinder bases and use the aforementioned prints, I imagine.
I'll look further for "Battle Games in Middle Earth" too, thanks for the tip.

Thanks all for your advice! In the end, I've opted for Pathfinder pawns. They are available where I live (Switzerland), and although expensive the artwork is nice, they include bases, and there are a ton of characters so I should also be able to use them for other settings. Also I assume I can use the bases in combination with other paper minis, such as those in the downloads section (or those I found on drivethrurpg).

Yes, those bases can be used with the minis found here and elsewhere on the internet. Which set did you get?

As it happens, I ordered exactly that one, plus the bestiary (1). Now I just hope they have it in stock or can source it...

Crap, they are out of stock and can't give me a deadline of availability...

Were you ordering through Paizo?

No, from a Swiss shop. Ordering abroad is too costly, customs just kill us here... Looks like this stuff is mostly out of print or hard to get.
I heard an interesting tip today in an RPG podcast: using binder clips to serve as bases! I will try that, combined with the "Monster Stand-ins" file I purchased on drivethru. I'll manage something, eventually.

You are Swiss? Just curious; what "flavour" (German/French/Italian) are you?

Which flavour, ha ha! From the French speaking part ("Romand"), living on the shores of Lake Geneva. Nice place to be, but it has its drawbacks to be Swiss as well. One of them being outside of the EU and having to pay outrageous shipping and customs fees.

Bienvenue. I was just curious because there are so many German speakers here. You are bucking the trend!
