FYI, i mentioned to my wife and my daughter that voting was open to new forum members and they wanted to hop on and vote to support me,
i just didnt want anyone to see 3 accounts from my IP and think i was trying to do anything fishy.

FYI, i mentioned to my wife and my daughter that voting was open to new forum members and they wanted to hop on and vote to support me, i just didnt want anyone to see 3 accounts from my IP and think i was trying to do anything fishy. First off - I think it's good that you're open about it and it's sweet that your family wishes to support you. Nevertheless, I think also, it's bad style. The way I see it, this competition is supposed to be for people who are passionate about the hobby, who wish to show their work and want to be inspired by others' work. Everyone of us has friends and family he could ask to come here and vote for them. The competition would then quickly devolve into a contest of who can motivate the most people to vote here and not of who can design or build the best mini or model and enthuse the most of his fellow papercrafters to vote for them. A few years back we had a contestant who did this on purpose to manipulate the voting. squirmydad was then forced to limit voting to forum members who had at least 10 posts to their name. Obviously that rule has been waived again. I'm not assuming that you want to manipulate the contest. But it seems to me that you're uncomfortable with the situation and that is why you're raising the point before someone might suspect you of cheating. I know that I would feel uncomfortable under the circumstances. I always tell my friends and the players in my regular gaming group of the contest after the voting is finished to prevent them from interfering on my behalf. I imagine that you also did not want to deny your nearest and dearest the opportunity to support you and that this is also uncomfortable to you. Their voting for you may not be against the rules of the competition, but to me it goes against the spirit of the competition and against the concept of fair play. To sum up: I understand your dilemma and appreciate your honesty, but I still felt the need to express my stance on the matter.

Yeah i had heard that voting was open to new members and mentioned it to my wife and she told me she had already voted last night, then my daughter jumped on board. If you guys want to discount them im totally cool with it, just wanted to be transparent.

If a new member is here to participate in the forums, great! They should feel free to vote. If they signed up only to vote, they are not members of the community, and the contest is not for them. They should not vote. Seriously, some of us could command dozens to hundreds of vote-only new users. I disagree. If they signed up to vote, they ARE a member of the community. We don't get to decide what level of participation somebody needs to contribute to be a member of a community, and new eyeballs are good for all of us.

What I want is for everyone to come out and play. Some people will sit on the sidelines and watch, some people will critique and not play, and a small percentage will play. That's a community. I don't like judges for showcases like this. That's why made it open to the community for voting. I locked up this conversation a few hours ago to give a little cool down. And also at the time I was too angered by this thread to be polite and rational.

I've been at vacation, so I didn't have a chance to contribute this year. But man, am I impressed or am I impressed? The overall quality is really high this year! It was hard to cast my votes, but I managed to pick some favourites. Good luck to each and very one of the contributors! And... with contributions like this, who cares if the voters are year long actives or just lurkers who signed up yesterday? The general purpose of this showcase is, as I understand it, to get more people to participate and contribute, and create more free papertreasures for the community. And I'd say that goal has been achieved.

Now that old squirmydad has spoken, I've deleted my comments from this thread. I'll save any further discussion for talking about next year's contest, if we are invited to do so.

Just a question for next year. I put my Lich in the single figure category but since it's 3D, it just occured to me that maybe I should have put it in the "model" category instead. Should I do so next contest ?

Next year, we need to spell it out on eligibility to vote before it starts.
I lean towards open voting myself, but that lends itself to tampering. And like in the case above, I see family support or support of friends as being good, but also open to abuse.
For those who go to other forums, you will notice my lack of notices this year. I did not expect my entries to do well, but I felt that if I promoted Papercuts at say papermodelers.com, the folks over there would come over and skew the vote, which I didn't want to do.
This year we had more entries than before. Positive. We have new faces. Again positive. We have a broader range of genres and styles. Also positive.
I want to see the positives continue without hint of taint. Next year we just need to hash out the voter eligibility ahead of time

It'd be pretty neat if this coming year, we made a monthly effort to remind people of the success of this year's papercuts, mention how long it's been going on, and let people know that they have until next time to get involved, either by working on and submitting fun stuff, or by just joining the forums and supporting the creators.

I made 3rd in the Tiles section, yay!!! Congrats to all winners! I can't help but wonder, if my shed and my shuttle would have done better without minis in the Design section. On the other hand, I could only have entered one of both there...

I am flabbergasted that so many people voted for my Free Trader Ship over some other AMAZING models in the competition. I have to believe the underrepresented Sci-Fi genre of my model helped me along there. I have been lurking here on the board for about a year and feel like I am ready to start playing with the Big Boys now. So, "Thank You!" to all those that threw their vote my way.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all of the participants in papercuts. From the entrants, to those who just wanted to see some cool stuff get made (I exist in both categories). Congratulations to all of the winners, and a job well done to everyone (particularly squirmydad for running this whole damn thing, thank you so much). Two years ago I placed 4th out of 5, this year I tied for 4th out of 8, I honestly have no idea what that means statistically, and i don't care (apparently as much as I care about run on sentences). Just being a part of this means a lot to me. I am sincerely honored to be in all of your company.

I have been remiss in neglecting to make a final announcement that the gallery and download section for the 2019 Papercuts Showcase are up, and have been up for some time, sorry. In case you didn't see all of the wonderful entries the first time, here is everything; www.onemonk.com/papercuts-2019.html
