Got it verified that Warren's birthday party is going to have a pirate theme this year, on either August 1 or August 8 or 9. And his mom is wondering if I could make up some pirate hats and eye patches for those who don't have them. And if I could make him some playsets, sturdy enough for a three-year-old, that would be the best thing to get him. I have eleven boats listed as Pirate or Pyrate on my hard drive. There are the Peter Pan playsets. There are the Jake and the Neverland Pirates playsets. Pritt playsets. shadowolf's brig and pirates. grendelsmother64's pirates. Dryw the Harper's Imperfect Pirates. The Popeye's Treasure Island playset. All the vintage Treasure Island playsets. I may be changing my Papercuts theme

Yes indeed, but on these, I need to go with a more 'cartoon-like' style.

Since the theme was picked based on how Jake and the Neverland Pirates is his favorite show, I am going to work on those playsets first and then start figuring out how to supplement those. kind of like I did with the How to Train Your Dragon, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/6426/smack-dab-on-meridian-miseryOnce I get basic stuff, then I can figure out what else will make for playability. And of course, the playsets are not uniform. I think I will do the figures about 50% larger than 32mm, with a layer of reinforcement between the sides. Then I'll resize the three playsets off that. I need to see what will fit in from the different Peter Pan playsets. Maybe I should watch an episode or two, so that I can get a better idea of what would fit

I am not sure I could sit through another episode. Well, maybe for my grandson, but I don't think I could sit through two in one night...

Paw Patrol was even better than what I saw

Oh, I had to make all the Paw Patrol puppies for my daughter several years ago... and all of the Frozen caracters and... everything she saw, even a few pirates. Some of the figures still survived (big surprise! ) But the greatest joy for her was a little figure of herself. So she could experience all the adventures with her paperfriends. Maybe an idea to think about. (Also my son wanted a figure from himself and also my wife after seeing the first figure... ) Unfortunately i can't remember where i got the pirates from. Best regards, Andreas

Just estimating from the Litko bases, it looks like you made these a bit larger than normal gaming scale. Is that right?
I wish I still had my laminator

Hello,
the pirates are 28-30mm from toes to eyes, the Paw Patrol figures are a little overscale (32mm, 22mm for the puppies) . The bases are not from Litko. They are 20mm roundbases I bought from a game accessories shop in a big bag of several hundred. Don't ask me where, it was more than ten years ago.
Best regards, Andreas

and and the Hallmark Jolly Roger could somewhat fit in. Keeping a Disney Junior theme, Tink and the Disney fairies Found some other paper pirate playsets to go along with these and figures from the forum here. Now I am trying to format things so that they kinda look like they could fit in with each other

Started collecting pirates and scaling for this, and then scaled the primary Jake playset, family.disney.com/activity/jake-and-the-never-land-pirates-playset/ , to these The JNP characters are at 70%, but Tic Toc Croc and the background are now at 120% I will then scale the Pirate Mummy's Tomb and the Log Roll playsets similarly There are also several other sets with additional characters and props that I will add to the mix, along with some trees, bushes and rocks EDIT -- I really wish they designed backdrops instead of drawing dotted lines on a drawing. Going to play with how the edges line up and add a couple props on the back Pirate Mummy's tomb did not add many figures And the backdrop is flat on this one And yes, these are mirror backs, but the originals either had no backs or blank except for 'Copyright Disney' I do want to have a nod to Peter Pan with some characters from the animated feature film

And the backdrop is flat on this one Those look really great! You could quite easily rework the Backdrop, so it has a floor and angled sidewalls: Just make diagonal cuts in the lower corners (green lines), then fold up the floor (horizontal blue lines), and fold the sides forward (vertical blue lines). Either use tape to hold everything in place, or add glue taps...

I wish they had used that much thought on the other one in placing the cut and fold lines

Is it that bad?
|
|
|
Post by Vermin King on Jun 29, 2020 10:07:23 GMT -9
Left side isn't that bad, but on the right, the base has water along the join, where the upright portion has sand along the base, so it will need a little work.
On the second playset's figures, they used the same figure of Smee as in the other set, so I found another image of him that I substituted in.
Evidently, Peter, Wendy, John, Michael, Nana and Tinkerbell have been in episodes and videos, so I think I am going to add the JNP versions of them to the second character set. That leaves two more spots for figures, so I think I will add the Pirate Princess and her bird for one and Zongo the Pirate Monkey King for the other
I still want to do a set of props in that style, too. My plan is to enlarge the Treasure Chest model (they have actually released four versions of it, all slightly different) to keep the figures in. I'm going to ignore the Log Roll playset probably. Capt Flynn is the same figure as in Mummys Tomb, and the other figures are one-siders straddling the log. But I may do the Sand Castle playset, if I have time

Perhaps make the treasure chest a real thing with some sweet treats in it?

What could be sweeter than little playset figures lovingly crafted by Grandpa? Okay, possibly he can dig through the guys to get to something with a high sugar content. Seriously, I plan to enlarge it enough to use foamcore on the inside for strength. Or I could take a page from kris and use corrugated cardboard, which would be strong enough without being so thick. And the interior would then be brown, not white. Sounds like a plan. I still need to do a figure of Warren and one of Zoe, his sister.

Well, the Darlings may be in Jake episodes and videos, but I couldn't really find images I liked. So, I took part of this image and part of that one, and ended up with these Peter and Nana are straight-away, but the rest took far longer than I planned, and I was talking to Kathy for an hour and a half, so I haven't gotten the borders done. Once I do those, I will copy, flip and rotate to get the mirrored backs. I also started gathering images to get more trees, bushes and rocks, the treasure chest and the hideaway tiki lever. Those and Red Jessica, Zongo, Warren and Zoe will go on the last page of figures

Not a bad morning. Woke up a bit early and thought I might as well get that set of figures done and did a little on the one backdrop. Not perfect, but I think it will be much better than the original

The one I enlarged and modified actually doesn't look that bad to begin with but I think altering the beach will help. Here is one of the treasure chests I am planning on enlarging

I did it again. While looking for Carracks and Cogs, I saw a photo of a waterline version of the Papertoys Santa Maria, www.papertoys.com/santamaria.htm, and I copied the location of where the build was located, only I copied something else before I went there for further review. Now I can't come up with ideas for search parameters to get back to it. Has anyone built this? The one I saw looked really good, but since he obviously knew enough about re-designing it to be a waterline model, he probably did other enhancements

So I could print off Laddie for the Hoard, I went ahead and printed the first set of figures. I probably won't be done with it before the Zoom get-together tomorrow. Speaking of which, it is going to be at 11 AM Pacific Time and I am guessing oldschooldm would welcome more attendees, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/10251/kitbashing-stream-buildingBy the way, I hate this method they used for doing figures. I'm trying different ways to do them en masse but they have a tendency to want to be handled individually. I might regret formatting these others to the originals' method...

Keeping in mind that I shrank the figures to 70% and enlarged the setting to 120%, it seems a bit cramped I found the episode title screen that this came from, so I am thinking about doing my own version, but first I need to find a good phone stand

Had a funeral two hours away Saturday and went to my folks Sunday and got one of my cars into the shop down there before returning home today. Lots of road/thinking time.
The one thing that is disappointing about that backdrop is that there is very little beach for characters to do anything on. Ground tiles! By doing ground tiles that will fit into the exposed base of the backdrop, but extend out from the backdrop, I can have a decent sized play area and still keep the overall look. When he is done playing, the figures go back into the treasure chest and the ground tiles will be stored under the backdrop or behind it. Not much sense redesigning the whole thing when ground tiles solves the issue
