I said June was a quiet month, but July really came through! 23 new members hopped on board, and I hope some have found fun stuff that helps fill out their game table. High fives to gomezaddams51, kenosis, rytebyte and sirkerry for taking the time to say 'hello'! I hope you all continue to drop into the forums and contribute when you get a chance. Here's 5 easy ways to make this community better: 1) Share pictures of paper minis in action. It can really make an artist's day. 2) Tell gaming friends to come over to the forum. The more, the merrier! 3) Tweet about your favorite paper mini or terrain maker. 4) Buy some stuff off of DriveThruRPG (or sister site), try out the product, and leave a good review. 5) Try to make something to share! Modify one of the past hoard submissions or make your own thing. It's all good! Thanks for being here!

Hi all, just read the post about new members in july so i thought id check in.
Ive built a few Ravenfell buildings and some terrain from world works games before.
A question i have as well, do you guys think the Canon mp-101 matte photo paper is any good for buildings? I know my inkjet can handle that just fine.
Oh and also, do you guys "finish" you buildings with anything to strengthen or protect them?
Thanks! Ill posts some builds when i have time, currently working on some frostgrave stuff.

It may be my printer, but the one building I did with mp-101 paper didn't really look that much better than what I print on Neenah 110# paper. It actually seemed too dark to me. I think you will just have to try and compare.
I use Krylon Clear Matte and Clear Satin to protect my projects.
Welcome

You can reinforce the walls from inside with breakfast cereal cardboard in case the paper is bending too much.
P.S. Welcome aboard.

Hi there. I'm a new arrival. I usually paint metal and plastic models and scratchbuild terrain from heavier materials but, I saw some really cool paper models some of your users created and thought I would so I could see more of your creations.

I guess I'll say hello!
I'm a complete beginner, but I've been a big fan (and advocate) of paper minis for a long time. Some of you might know me from my D&D resources site Loot The Room.
I'm very much looking forward to getting to know the community, and trying my hand at making some art!

Welcome to the forum. To me, there are lots of things that can be done so much better in paper than other mediums. I was never good at painting minis and models, so paper fits for me, especially since I learned how to use Gimp in order to 'create' things. How much of a beginner are you? I often mention the Canon one-pagers as a great way to get started. cp.c-ij.com/en/categories/CAT-ST01-0071/top.htmlPaper models fall into three categories: Fold-overs, Organic and Rectilinear. Fold-overs are like minis. Organic is like animals and aircraft. Rectilinear is like buildings. Canon has little one-page animals that look cute even if you mess them up. They also have mini buildings. Free models to work on while you learn how paper behaves is a great way to learn

I've only really built figures thus far - mainly Trash Mob Minis and Printable Heroes - so nothing more advanced than some of Trash's 2.5d model kits. I have a lot of terrain and buildings sitting waiting to be built, too, I just need to carve out the time to get around to it 😁

He's being modest. Mr LootTheRoom hangs out with all the big names in paper minis and at this point is probably an expert on all the techniques that go into the creation of paper models and minis. He's quite the expert map maker too, doing some fantastic work on that front!

I am a little early on this... if someone hops on board in the next couple of hours, forgive me if your name isn't on the list. I'm glad you're here, too!!! August brought 20 new people to our shores. I wasn't sure if this was a high or low number given the Papercuts Awards, so I checked last years' numbers. We're ahead by one this year! That's great! Special nods go to gilaspit (hope your new 5e campaign is off to a good start!), Antohammer (your pixel art minis are a fun addition!), horridperson (you don't sound so horrid! I hope you continue to be inspired by cool paper minis and terrain), loottheroom (complete with great submission to the papercuts awards!) and PieterVreeburg (mind sharing some pics of Darkfast Dungeons in action?). You all not only signed up, but you took a moment to hop out of the shadows and add some activity to the forums. That's the kind of stuff we need! To the rest of the crowd that signed up, feel free to drop an introductory note here - let us know what kind of gaming you're into, or what resources you're looking for. The more posts we get, the merrier. Lastly, WOW - the Papercuts this year are fielding some GREAT submissions! Thank you, everyone who has taken the time to photograph and post your work. It's a whole extra layer to just having fun at the table that takes time and energy, so I appreciate you sharing that stuff. Spread the word in your circle of gaming friends - have them come by the forums some time and check out what papercrafting has to offer!

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forum. I've been watching members' works and I am really astounded. I'm interested in art and crafts related to rpg and wargaming. I like the idea of playing on a limited budget, resorting to creativity and crafting game aids to add fun. I'd love to learn from you and, hopefully, show my own works in the future. Best regards!

Welcome to the forum. I'm still learning myself, but even with my sledgehammer approach, I sometimes surprise myself with a few nice pieces. I would suggest just jumping in. Figure out what works for you and ask lots of questions.
And read a lot

Welcome to the forum. If you don't have a graphics program, you need to get one. I use Gimp, an older version. The latest upgrade I did had some features built in that may be great for altering photos, but were horrible for my needs. I use 2.8.4 currently.
Bases are a matter of preference. Do a search for 'bases' and you will find several approaches. Whichever style you choose to use, Gimp (or photoshop, etc.) will allow you to customize your bases to whatever textures you like.
For the minis, are you wanting to start from scratch on those, or manipulate images to turn into minis?

I have Gimp I am just terrible at drawing. I am not sure I can use an image to create a back side. Are there tools in Gimp that would help?

I am not good at all with figures. When I do backs, I copy and paste it next to the original figure. In small sections, I erase the backside and use pencil to draw in where I think the lines should go. I then sample textures from the front to fill. Like I said, I'm not very good at it. cowboyleland is very good at it.
