Papercraft Warrior great suggestion. Thanks. pavaro I made those bases out of foam core/foam board. You can find it at craft stores, or the dollar store. Its pretty inexpensive. I will be posting the grass texture on my Patreon page today (thanks for reminding me haha)

wyvern I've also had a hard time pinning down what it means exactly to be goblin haha. They've gotta be my favorite creatures to draw, and play. I'm reluctant to solidify their look and feel in my own work. I think that's why focusing on culture and environment rather than racial traits is the way to go if you want to hold onto some freedom. I do like the idea that they were initially created as servants to the more malevolent gods. Of course that didn't pan out the way they intended. I've been working on getting everything together for my Patreon Launch (hopefully tomorrow!). The command group has been ready for a little while now. I'm just holding off on posting until I have a photo of a unit at full strength, and the formatting and branding done on my page layouts. I like the idea of having some extra variety in the form of "character" troops. I think I will implement this in my next set. Oh and that 20mm Romans idea sounds so great! Nice one

Thanks cowboyleland . Suspended disbelief is something i defineitly strive for in my designs. I enjoy a more practical aesthetic than over the top. That's just my taste. I agree that the poses are all pretty static. I told myself it was to "showcase the design" but thats probably just a cop out haha! I am planning on making some illustrations to go along with the designs, and paper minis. Those will be more dynamic. I always loved the little black and white spot illustrations in the old Warhammer rulebook (back when they were more gory and dark). I grew up on that stuff. Adrian Smith and Karl Kopinski are my heroes. I hope to make some of my own in that spirit. For now, here are the first few concepts and studies of the Northern light infantry. Ah yes, I should mention that I've decided to embrace the very much Viking look. They will have wilder, older, North-er counterparts coming at a later date.

Final update for this batch of sketches. I think i've got a good base to build upon. Moving on to the minis themselves!

My intention with these beyond making paper minis for tabletop wargames, is to develop my concept art portfolio through the creation of a cohesive setting where all of these characters (which the minis represent) are vying for resources. I'll be marketing them as part of that setting. Having said that, the minis themselves wont be tied to any particular rules system (although they are being designed primarily with KoW in mind) so people are free to use them however they wish! Now that you mention it, these guys may have turned out a little too vanilla viking for my liking. I wanted the Northern Clans to be inspired by the vikings, but still have their own unique feel and history. These seem to fall on the conservative end of the design spectrum. I think I was being too cautious of ending up with Chaos Warriors haha. Still happy with the progress though. I feel like I'm developing my fantasy aesthetic, and thats the idea! Here's half of the batch finalized.

Here's an update on the Northmen. More sketches. I also played with the proportions to give them a more natural look vs. heroic scale. I'm going to slap some color on them and then start making the minis themselves.

wyvern Thank you! I have thought about perhaps adding another arm variation to my next set of models, but as Papercraft Warrior pointed out they were designed to be somewhat poseable. The shield strap is a good idea. I will post pictures soon showcasing a full unit all ranked up. I know I said I was calling this one done but...I decided I'd have to make command group to really round the set out. I think having that element of height and a little extra detail in the front row will be worth it.

Just wanted to post this here since I'm calling it done. A unit of Goblin warriors I made as a proof of concept for my upcoming paper armies project. This community has been a great resource. I have learned so much already. You guys are great! If you're interested, you can see the progression in my post on the 'Gallery'. If anyone makes these guys I'd love to see photos!

I'm confused now hahaha By "base" i meant the grassy rectangle included with the files. mproteau (Paper Realms) those tabs are brought in straight from the template. The grassy rectangle should be 100mm x 80mm but when I measured it (several times) it was always a few mm short (like 96.5mm x 78mm for example). So i assumed it was a printer issue.

Love those greenies Papercraft Warrior! I've noticed after measuring the printed base (and the gobbos too it seems) the final result is always a smidge too small. I can't figure out the problem. At first I thought it was a printer scaling issue, but now i really don't know what it could be.

Hello arcticdragongames I'm loving KoW too. Those Trident Realms look great! I especially like those repurposed dryads.

Thanks very much Papercraft Warrior, your advice has been a great help. I've been doing some research and you've confirmed much of what I've been pondering. I agree that having that backlog of content would really be a good idea before getting out there. I think having a years worth made available and then a years worth of back up upon launch would be ideal! Alas, that's asking too much at at the moment. Maybe I should wait for now, part of me wants to dive in headfirst, but I think doing a bit of both is a good compromise. I'm thinking I could probably manage to set up a few months of releases during the first few months and keep working ahead to have that buffer. Once the Patreon starts producing some revenue, I can spend more time on it and hopefully end up at a comfortable schedule. I just can't wait to get these out there! haha I'd like to offer a large portion of the work for free. The idea is to enable more people to play these games that would otherwise not be able to. Also, I think people recognize and respond to that. I have visited drivethrurpg a few times but otherwise am unfamiliar with it. As for Kickstarter, I think you're right. It makes more sense to go down that route once I have everything pretty much done. It would be cool to find a printer/cutter and be able to offer a physical product (gets me excited just thinking of the packaging, box art, and all the extras) which only requires a few drops of glue to be table ready. Something for the future.

I'll keep all that in mind moving forward. Thats exactly what I had in mind for the champions btw! I printed out the set and put them together. I believe the alignment issues I was having earlier were due to the piece of card I'm using as a support for the copy paper. I'd like to experiment with cardstock or matte photopaper to eliminate this problem. However, after assembling a few, I got the hang of it. Maybe the shields are a little big. Also the axe head with the spike at the back proved too fiddly to cut out. I'll keep that in mind with future designs. I think I'll tweak the workflow to allow easy weapon swapping so that I can adapt these guys as spearmen. Overall I'm really happy with how they turned out. If anyone wants to take a whack at them be my guest! I can almost call them finalized now. I'll have to start working on getting them out there and making a Patreon page...or a kickstarter maybe?

Just recovering from a bit of the flu. Feeling better. Here are the goblins with some variation. So these are intended to fill the back ranks of a unit. For the front ranks I'd like to make some more variations with raised weapons and with command (musician, standard bearer, and unit leader). Initially I was thinking of releasing these guys for free, and offering the front ranks sheet for patrons. What do you guys think? I want the free option to have enough variation to look good on the table, but the paid option needs to have enough extras to merit the cost. Another idea I had was to offer unit extras such as alt shields, banners, trophies, etc. Also toying with the idea of adapting each unit for 15mm...

Haha what great praise! I got a great kick out of that one! Thanks The feedback definitely helps keep me motivated. Its tough when it feels like you're just shooting everything into the abyss without every knowing how/if people are responding to it. I don't think anyone who really loves doing their creative thing does it for the likes, but it is a great way to communicate and connect with people.

Just stumbled onto this thread. Great stuff!
I'm working on putting together a Patreon page for paper minis designed for tabletop wargames. I see a lot of great work for RPGs but not so much as far as big blocks of troops.
I've been thinking a lot about the business model lately. I've only just started making the minis themselves. I'd like to offer the base (front and back) models for free, and then unit upgrades (more poses, heads, banners & command, extra shields, etc) and alt designs for patrons. As well as the usual alt color schemes, psd files and such as higher tier rewards. I'd appreciate any input or ideas.
I've got a thread going with my progress in the gallery.

I completely agree with cowboyleland. Coming into this with no prior knowledge of your situation, I'd say you have an opportunity to negotiate.

Working on some variations now. Excited to get them all printed and ranked up. Thanks again to everyone for the input.

Another update on the goblins. Not sure if spending so much time on the drawing is the best idea; I plan to paint over most of it for the final color versions. However, I believe some people enjoy coloring the minis themselves, so I wanted to include the linework. Either way, I am thoroughly enjoying myself! Vermin King I took your advice and went with a slightly thicker outline on the backs. Haven't made any prints of these yet. We'll see how they turn out. Once I'm done these, I'm going to mix and match some limbs and heads to make some variation. Will keep working and updating as I go!

Nice man! Productivity wins over laziness this time. Everyone knows that struggle. I find the more you build momentum, the less laziness rears its uggly head.
Heres hoping for a super productive week ahead!
