A warm hello to all my fellow Cardboard Warriors! I hope you're staying healthy (and sane) during these weird times. I'm back yet again for another whack at some paper minis. Its been a while since I've posted anything new, but I've been working here and there behind the scenes. I must say I've been inspired by the other Cardboard warriors' great work over on the small scale board. I've been writing some rules as well as working on the background + concept art for a tabletop wargame project. Here are the beginnings of some goblin spearmen for said project. I'm planning on producing them at 18mm or 15mm with the option for 28mm as well. I'm going with flats this time. The idea is to be able to cut out an entire rank (probably 4 men) as one mini, similar to some of Peter Dennis' great Paperboys. Any comments + criticism welcome! Great to be back on here.

Been getting back into Kings of War recently, Gloomhaven, and enjoying Root also! I tried Rising Sun once and it was pretty fun. I've been slowly working on developing a rules system of my own for small scale (10-15mm) hex based wargame.

I am working on some smaller scale (15mm) stuff atm. However progress has been slow. I'm also curious to hear more from those who are interested in the smaller stuff.

alloydog yeah ive been thinking about this too. My first inclination was to go with fixed bases due to the size and fiddliness mentioned earlier. When i did some 28mm figs i would slot them into foamcore. Id imagine that could work... Another idea i had was to only have 1 contact point for the base, say on the back side of the mini, to allow the ranks to all fold flat in one direction. Will have to do some testing...

alloydog glad to hear you like doing blocks of figures too! Since these will be considerably smaller (15mm as apposed to the more common 28mm) i want to avoid fidly cutting and assembly. The idea is to have each rank be its own mini. However i will be drawing out each pose individually and rearranging them within the ranks to add some variety across the unit. I also want to have subtle differences as you mentioned for variety from man to man. Im quite sure that i want to have a unique cpmmand element for each unit (banner, misician, champion) and perhaps some unique poses from rank to rank (like the lowered spears in the 2nd line).

Hello fellow Cardboard Warriors!! Despite my recent absence on the forums, I have been slowly working on my 15mm paper minis for small scale Kings of War. I really tried to kick the habit, but I've found myself coming back to the little paper soldiers time and again. Not that its a bad way to spend one's time! The thing is I'm at a point where I need to decide where to focus my time and energy in regards to my (many) creative projects. I just may have to keep this one from my wonderfully supportive girlfriend for the time being. I know (because she's told me) that she's tired of hearing me go back and forth about what to draw/paint/make next. You're all guilty by association now! Hahah anyway here are some pictures of a quick mock up I did of some stinking elves. I decided to go back to the ol' black outline + line-work. I tried to keep the design as simple and clear as possible. I plan on refining the drawing a bit for the real deal. Still no news on the DriveThru front. I will get to it someday. Its on the long list of things to do.

Here's the first round of test prints! Just b/w for now. I like the amount of detail/readability. I love the scale and physical feel of them (mounted on illustration board adds some weights compared to the foamcore I've been using). I'm not so sure about the black background/outline. I will do some tests with white, and maybe add some of the base color in "behind" them up to about knee height. I may also shift the perspective to be looking down at them more instead of head on. I am toying with the idea of trying to do these in traditional media (gouache/watercolor paint). I'm not sure that it would add anything aesthetically, but it would be nice to get away from the computer screen... I feel like it would be much more challenging. I don't know if I have the patience; I just want to print them out and put them on a base already!

8rad those look great! I've found myself falling in love with the smaller scale. Currently working on an army project at 10/15mmm myself. Antohammer i am also intrigued by the idea of printing on some sort of transparent material. I think it would be great for projects that require groups of minis in rank + file, not to mention flyers!

Vermin King thanks! Depends what game you're playing. I intend to use the Kings of War rules. In KoW, these 5 guys would represent 1 rank of troops. A unit can be made up of 2 - 8 or even 10 ranks of troops! A unit is treated as a single "game piece" and will fight and die as one.

ah, nice! I was wondering about a white border... I will have to do some tests.
I decided to go with 15 mm in the end.
How did they feel on the battlefield? I believe the smaller scale would be better at creating the illusion of 3D with just the artwork.

I decided to go with 15mm scale. I'm hoping to be able to make a couple of decent armies quickly with this method. I also decided to forgo the line drawing completely. I found the lines just got in the way at that small size. I'm planning on doing the backs, and then colorizing them in photoshop right on top of the values. Happy with the look so far. Let me know what you think.

Hey everyone! Just messing around today and printed a quick test run of some 10 mm orcs for minihammer/KoW. I'm surprised at the readability I could get at that small scale. Anxious to see how they look with some color. Let me know what you think! Would you use these?

Thanks for the input Toman and wyvern ! I will looking into it. cowboyleland its good to be back pavaro honestly the best advice I could give is use reference, and try to think of the simple forms underneath. The way i chose to represent the chain mail was to first draw horizontal lines that followed the forms of the body, that is roughly cylindrical, keeping the perspective in mind. I then drew some small diagonal dashes in between these horizontal lines to represent the individual links, alternating the direction of the dashes for each row. I found this to be quite effective in representing the general feeling of the chain mail. Since we're always trying to represent forms in perspective, I made sure to gradually increase the spacing between these dashes as they got closer to the center, and then make them closer together as they reached each end of the cylinder. This gives the illusion of form. Here's an example: // / / / / / // I hope that helps!

Hello again! I've been doing other things lately, as any of my past patrons may know, but I haven't been able to shake the paper minis completely. I just played some games of Kings of War with a friend and all the ideas came flooding back! I would like to take another whack at producing some paper armies for miniature war games. I also just missed being on here and interacting with my paper mini peers! I realized I didn't post all of my free files on here. So please find all of them below. I'm thinking of putting the paid versions up on drivethru rpg. The Games Crafter versions barely sold at all, but I think it may be a pricing issue. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would love to hear from you. I was also hoping someone could fill me in on the details of getting my own board on here. Great to be back! Let me know your thoughts

old squirmydad Great video and review! I really appreciate the time you took to make it. I always get a kick out of seeing someone with my minis. That video made my day nolabert Thanks for that comparison! I will be contacting the Game Crafter about the alignment issues. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

pavaro I have been thinking about creating a more detailed illustration to go with each set and releasing it as a typical 2D fig. For the time being I must focus on getting on top of and ahead of my current work load.
