@rannon, I am confused ... [1] I realllyyy do not mind this being on my thread at all, it is the whole reason i posted it here after all it took all of 5 min to create and colour her. ... [2] We can also start a "correct usage of gramar and punctuation" thread... its the only other subject i have seen to create as much controversy in forums as nipples on paper figures... Quote 1: dragnoz, yeahh, I thought so ... I really did understand your intentions! High Five! 5 min -> LOL ;D ;D ;D. 5 most effective minutes. Well done! Quote2: LOL2

kiladecus, you're welcome! I don't want you to feel unsure (I have been unsure and undecided half of my life). Do, what you want to do - and do it NOW. Showing nothing until it's finished, is a bit radical, but it depends on your project. I've said, the market is too fast/complex to observe and think through, so you're left alone to your INNER world of trusting your vision, ability and luck. Sometimes (especially if you want to earn some dollars) it's more wise to keep a good idea secret than to spread it for the ones who recognize its market potential and develop it faster/better than you ever could. This may be more of a problem in other disciplines (e.g. Mobile Games), but secrecy may be in general the safer option until you have secured your territory. Dave Graffam is established on the paper model market, everybody of the scene knows his products - and they like watching his WIP. It's part of his marketing strategy to keep customers and fellow artists interested and his work open-minded and personal. Marketing by Tutorial and Atelier Invitation has a long tradition in the arts. In Germany we have the term "Werkstattschau" - that means something like "(artist's) workshop show" ... . EDIT: your Mecha is promising - 15 cm is f***ing huge. Sounds interesting that it will be poseable. You see, those are the things potential customers are listening to: poseable Mecha? Cool ... . Expand and refine on those core ideas etc. - e.g. what about a completely MODULAR (BOXY) Transformers-style Mecha-Universe!? (Ups, good idea!? Damn ...) I know, it's only a fast concept sketch, so, you have copy&pasted the textures. Be careful, the larger the model, the more details and variety you need to make it look outstanding and not boring. So learn to layer different textures (basic + scratches + dirt + rust + symbols + technical stuff + cables + ... etc.) and combine them to generate variety and safe time. Sometimes even fast color dirt washing with opacity 50% or so on a new layer will do the trick. There are tons of texture tuts out on the net ... .

Yes, I know, Rhannon and kiladecus. I've interpreted Dragnoz's 'MissMam' as a provocative act of wild artistic freedom to beat the half-dead horse again ... ;D. As I've failed to follow your prolongated and emotional dispute in December, I just wanted to add a few lines. Of course, this is spiraling out of control very soon - so I think, Cowboy and myself have ended our conversation here (right, @cowboy?). Everything important has been said and we mutually agree. PEACE. If Dragnoz wants those last posts to be pushed into another thread, we will do this. @cowboy, thanks alot for this interesting hint. I will research this. I am right now in the rules testing/compilation phase, so every inspiration (to expand and rework the rules) is helpful. I know, that the artwork will be demanding, especially the gamecard gfx. It will suck the life out of my soul. Settlers of Catan? Yes, but on Steroids. EDIT: Did the Dragon ad look like this? -> boardgamegeek.com/image/572648/wizardsAvalon Hill's Classic "Wizards" (1982), which is LeGuin-inspired, I suppose. Esoterical, spiritual gaming, indeed. End of line, promised.

I'd like but I am not so altruistic. ... share what I was found during is a consequence. That I like. Ah well, sharing information with others for nothing than enjoyment is quite altruistic, isn't it? At least, it's not misanthropic. So, thank you, Rhannon, for your long and commented link lists ... . There was a thread about pricing. I have to study this too, sooner or later ... .

kiladecus, there is no reason to ever stop any creative process - only time or energy/health limits are acceptable reasons. The least acceptable reason is the opinion of others about your creative process. Others are not able to see your full potential as an artist. Only you yourself (and I mean it!) can know your own ability to grow by listening to your inner voice (heart). I've seen artists beginning late with really crappy stuff. No one bid on them - literally nobody. 2 years later they had firm ground under their feet - just by strength of will and systematic (!) practice. And I've seen other artists, talented as hell in young years - and their abilities dying when growing older, just by wasting their time and talent. It's never too late in the arts - never! Just keep on doing things - just DO it. That's enough for art and your mind to grow ... . If you want to take the professional route, then professionalize your mind-set, though: 1. Keep a table of your projects - and keep it secret. Don't waste your energy by talking about projects without hope or a clear and confirmed (thought-out) time-table. Decide for yourself, what to do, why and when - and how. And for whom. 2. Make a list what you want/have to improve - your skills, your art, your product, your marketing, whatever. Estimate, how long it will take to improve significantly. Decide, if your projects are realistically timed in regard to those constraints of skill and resources. 3. If you have a good plan, prove to yourself, that it's a good one. Check it from time to time. Change your plan, if you FEEL it doesn't work. Trust your instincts. The market is too fast and complex, you cannot THINK through all the hassle - FEEL your goal. Trust it - and then stick to it. If there are difficulties, make a pause, relax. If you feel better, go on ... . Hope that helps.

... Out of respect for Squirmy’s wishes (and mine and probably Kil too), I ask that we treat it as a “Read Only” document. Ah, now I see (somewhat) clearer ... . Folks, if an (important) discussion is split up into three different threads, it's really hard to follow for late-comers ... . Having read through this thread, I must confess, kiladecus, that my tongue feels like having read Salomon's Verses backwards for 10 hours.

Ah ... thanks, Rhannon (I know, you are right now digging in the archives to present hidden gems to this community ... will have a look at your posts ... .) Ok, they're not too bad, but a bit pricey, aren't they?! I read the name of almighty Steve Lortz (of this forum) of 'Quactica' fame, still available through Skirmisher Games. I wonder, how much H.G. Wells is in Tolkien. Morlocks are fitting Orc descriptions quite well (also their affinity towards 'bad' technology). And: Morlock, Mordor ... .

... I will, if I meet this little fellow. The older you get, the more he hides. But, could be, if you are getting really old, he shows himself more often ... . I just realize (watching YouTube), that I completely forgot the 'engine' parts and that my 'disk' seems to be turned over.

;D ... a MORLOCK! No way ... I must have been about 3 years old when I watched the classic movie version of the Time Machine on the television of my grandparents. I must say, that this movie was the start of my journey into the phantastic worlds of imagination. The time traveling stop and fast motion tricks stunned me as a kid - they still do - and the Morlocks - I was hiding behind my pillow all the time - they had glowing eyes and were quite furry, if I remember them well. Time for a YouTube refresher, I think ... . As proof of my claims I scan one of my earliest drawings - right after watching the film - my grandmother saved with her scissors. Guess, what it shows ... . ;D

Rostand. Oh, what a sad play. Lots of male deaths. But romance all over the place. I have a deep respect for theatre and acting - as my own brain is like a ragged pocket - everything is falling through. Without my notebooks, tables and plans - I am blind and helpless. Standing on the podium and forgetting my lines in front of 500 people - that's belonging to my worst nightmares. And body language (acting) is not my strength either, for sure. So, @cowboy - I bow to you - and be careful with the theatre blades ... .

... very wise words, @cowboy. I was looking for a debate, not a bar brawl - to change something. Of course, if I am in a sour mood, my voice could turn somewhat sharp and sometimes aggressive - cause I am MALE ... ;D. I agree with every word you've written, @cowboy. So we're thinking in very similar concepts, I guess. There are problems with oversexualization and 'objectivation'/degradation of female bodies - as there are problems with the humiliation/torture of every body thinkable of. E.g. I am quite disturbed by Japanese Sex Manga/Hentai (?) Culture (though I love Japanese art and culture in general), cause it's an expression of very twisted and sick concepts (underaged 'dolls' with oversized organs ...). Life and Death are - like Gold & Treasure (you have plenty of both in D&D) - core elements of what we could call 'Epic/Fairytale Storytelling'. They have their place in RPG and gaming cause they're main concerns of humans. But there are ethical problems, if you are 'leveling-up' by killing&looting only (first generation rpg rules, I guess). RPGamers are well aware of this problem, as alot of forum discussion on the net is showing. And there are rules in Basic and Classic D&D and other systems, that encouraged the rewarding of players for good roleplay, plot solving, successful monster/npc handling (= talking, diplomacy, trapping, NOT killing), successful ability checks etc. right from the start. So, the rules were always there, if gamers wanted something different out of their game than a big messy meat pit. I was a bit harsh to blame D&D for that. I should have said: the gamers are making their game, not the system. The world sim game you are sketching, @cowboy, is very similar to a boardgame I am working on for some months now. It's still too early to show any pics or rules, but I am confident to show something in the next weeks/months. This is a commercial and awfully big project for me ... but my heart is molten into this worldbuilding-thingie. I cannot say anything about the winning conditions of this game (as I've not developed anything specific - there are lots of possibilities, though) - as it's main purpose is open-ended gameplay to develop Epic Fantasy worlds & deep histories/campaigns. But I should say, that there can be 'havens of peace & light' in my game - and quite the opposite. It depends on the players' choices ... . I have to admit though, that I have no plans to integrate an animal rights score - but there are some concepts of Nature&Druidism some creatures are profiting from.

;D ... Hi, @cowboy ... . It was very provocative from you to react, as I am still in debating mood ... ;D. But, seriously, thanks for your reaction.
I don't know, if it's very wise and the correct place to stir the soup again ... , but I am with Okum, who said in the NUDITY-thread, that this is a very important debate. It is a deep one too - with very personal feelings and emotions towards different aspects of art and gaming. So it's natural, that feelings could get hurt during such a debate.
I have mentioned the 'violence-sexuality-IMBALANCE' - as I've put it in terms. That means: encouragement of bloody&gory art versus banning/censorship of even MILD erotica (nipples, booty and boobie forms, bare midriffs, pole posing etc.). That's even written in the forum/Hoard rules (as of Jim Hartman, I suppose). That makes sense to a certain degree in the context of child protection I wholeheartedly appreciate. BUT only to a certain degree it makes sense. Horror, Cruelty, Violence and Gore are also banned by child protection laws as is Pornography. And this is a fact due to the knowledge about the child's soul and psyche you want to protect against too harsh elements of the gruesome world of ADULTS (their world of War&Rape, you know - that's really ONE culture, as every war in History and on Mother Earth has proven ...). So, you have to ask yourself one question: why is GOREY STUFF encouraged, while SEXY STUFF is banned?
My answer is: we are talking here about the SAME ELEMENTAL psychic energy (you could call it 'Mars', if you want ...) with different faces: 'MALE' AGGRESSION, especially against it's antipode, the 'female' Harmony/Balance/Beauty (you could call it 'Venus', if you want ...). So, with IMBALANCE I mean: too much Testosterone, too few Estrogen, well, I prefer psychological models, not biochemical explanations, but you get the point ... .
As a roleplayer I am always fascinated by the COMPLETENESS of simulated game worlds - with rich settings and stories - look at Dryw's miniature collection - that's my idea of completeness. You could tell alot of LOVE stories with his minis too, if you want, not only adventuring = ethnic cleansing of dungeon level X. As Okum also put it in words: make your players in the group pay for their cruelty and worship of the God of Massacre. Make them feel, what it means to be a living meatgrinder. There should be something like a haven of peace and light (Rivendell), a better perspective and hope in your Campaign World - or it's just a big Concentration Camp, a biopolitical survival-of-the-powerful (which D&D is famous for, of course ...).
That said, I think, the PAPER form does not protect your children from 'bad influences', @cowboy - as especially paper minis could be more detailed and expressive than metal/plastics. If children have no ears for more subtle things than 'all-in-action'=killing beings, then I am really frightened.

... ah, MAGICAL ELVISH HEEL BOOTS ... how could I forget those! These make the Elven Maids the most orc-hunted subjects of the Empire. There are huge stockpiles of (bloody) Elvish Heel Boots in every major center of trade. Plot point! Some skeletons have been sighted in the Corpse Moor area lately. They were flying with magical elvish heel boots. The Empire will crumble. No, seriously, mesper, you know your stuff very well. And I find your SciFi minis very unique stylewise with confident 'ink' lines. Also you are doing tons of this stuff already - so you're rocking, no doubt about that!

;D the drool.
I have just learned, that Hoplite shields of the later, classical era were also bronze plated. About 8 kg. Uff! But seems to be, they were painted very colorful for at least parts of their (shiny) surface.
I have found lots of ready-made Greek shield patterns for 1/72 scale on the Net. Some very simple and abstract (spirals), some defining (letters!), some tribal-totemistic (mythological/animal).
So, what do you need?
I suddenly imagine to stamp shield patterns with Gimp on a simple, shiny bronze shield. Would be nearly historical and look cool.
Maybe I could make a full set out of this, if interest is high enough. Maybe this could earn me an own thread, too?

Ha, glad you like this, @glenn! Funny, I have to look up those Getty Shield Designs ... . I was not referencing any historical material while painting - I even didn't know what to paint on the shield - a dragonhead - an ant - a demon? Demon! So I tried to resemble a pseudo-greek theatre mask look. I wanted to give the bronze parts an archaic, preclassical look with rich ornaments and runic inscriptions (that's the Aztec influence). I really had some Runequest mood while painting. So you cannot take this too seriously for 'authentic' Ancient Greek armor. Weaponry is '300'(film)-like, helmet is more or less classical, shield design Pseudo-Homerian. The shield is bronze-plated, which would be very heavy, but I think there is some evidence for such shields around 1200 BC. So, you are interested in a multicolor-faction set, @glenn? I could change the cloak color most easily - the shield design is a different thing - those bronze effects are eating a lot time. But if you are interested in more authentic shield designs I could research some pottery sources. As I imagine, the wooden or leathery shields of classical greece were more or less painted with colors ... . Lots of mythological creatures and animals ... . In greek style.

... really nice line-art with color wash here ... I like the Unicorn Riders and the running Beastmasters (with Big Cat Companions) the most. I also like the 'fine' lines which suit the fair elven kind very much. I am not on the puritanic side of things, really, but I get mixed feelings about the outfit of the females here too. Strange mix of Assyrian/Arabic/Japanese armor parts ... Elves from the Jungle, why not ... but HIGH HEELS? In the forest? Come on ... . Well, if it helps female roleplayers/wargamers to get into the mood ... cannot say something about that. @okum, the clip was funny, even without sound (I was too lazy to fetch my earphones ...) ;D

Thanks for that. What is one man's Paradise is the other man's Hell - that's the way Creation is. Just stumbled across this one (maybe I am just in debating mood ...), I've missed it. First impression: what a great achievement for humanity and culture - the Italian Renaissance, Parduz! Great shot. Second impression: as those superweapon-double-breasts are the main feature of 'MissMam', you, dragnoz - as an artist - should do, whatever is in your ability, to further the impression of huge double-breasts under skin-tight and stretchy Latex. Don't forget: 30 mm scale could need some exaggeration. 'Nipples' and 30 mm scale. That's a joke in itself, isn't it? Third impression: I just wanted to say a line or two in the other - outsourced - thread, just to realize, that it was CLOSED. Sad thing. Why is the debate banned to private messages only? I think, you, dragnoz, nailed it with your remarks about ending up with motionless, lifeless robots. I once tried to start a discussion about the violence-sexuality-imbalance on this Forum in the 'Nudity'-thread. The discussion was very one-sided, I mean: it was no discussion at all.

Ancients are the perfect legitimation for bare-and-heavy-breasted Cretan Priestesses or Insane Female Nude Bacchants tearing a poor shepherd apart. Both would be historical. I decided to paint an ahistorical bare-and-heavy-muscled Male Fantasy Warrior (oiled).

... Damn, those nasty money problems, you said it, Reivaj. I will run into some serious trouble for myself, if I continue to walk on the thin line, that's for sure ... . Yes, you should try to commercialize your paper minis, they're worth it. With your Vector Technique you could gain some time safe effects if you are doing large sets (like your Kreens) ... . This could pay off. I for myself have a bigger card-driven boardgame in my pipeline, which keeps on sucking time for some months now. I want to continue experimenting with paper miniatures though, but still a bit undecided about the right route to take. I have a complete Ruin Dungeon Tile Set, I want to sell on the obligatory platforms for 1 year now, but I am distracted by other stuff too easily to finish them for printing and demo assemblage, promotion pics etc. Time is running out, for sure ... .
