I was feeling pretty terrible last night, but instead of going to bed early I made... a wagon! (I feel better today.) This is my test model and notes about what to do next: This all fits on one sheet of paper, just barely. The optional pieces will probably have to put on a second page, and I'm sure I'll have some room left over on that page for some cargo accessories. I might also add a canvas cover, and maybe some fixed poles at the corners of the wagon bed. It guess it's just nice to know that wagons (and carts and coaches) can be made using my "easy" bits and pieces. It's all just a bunch of boxes stuck together. I'm not sure about the undercarriage I'm using on this one, but if it really starts to bug me I can easily create something else. Oh, I forgot one other addition! I'll create a little decorative piece to go along the sides of the driver's seat.

This looks great, Dave. If there's room on the second page, you might consider making a hay piece that can be put in the back. I'm picturing the PCs trying to get into the city hidden in a hay wagon. Come to think of it, you could just add a hay texture option to the canvas cover, to create a wagon piled high with hay.

Ace! Delirium clearly helps the creative process. (Man, the Rebellion needs more resources - many Bothans died?)

Here's an update on the wagon model, incorporating most of my planned changes. I still need to design the extras, but I want to give this a chance to simmer before I do any more work on it.

This I like a lot... I'll be needing this. Very cool. Especially if the textures are on par with your usual work.

I saw that one when I was searching for wagon images, and really like it. I'll probably do one like that eventually.

That's a fine looking wagon! Will you be making a "conestoga" version?
Just as a thought: Maybe the "yoke" (not sure of the term- pole thingy the horses are attached to) doesn't need to be 3D. For simplicity it may work to just be flat or folded over along the length to add a little more strength.

Yeah, I agree. (its called a yoke or singletree) I sure hope a Conestoga is in the works, I got some lil guys just itching to burn em

What's the deal with you, Dave? Is there NOTHING you can't tackle and do an AMAZING job with? Sheesh... are you JUST that talented, or do you have elves working on your computer at night when you sleep... I love the Ackbar jokes... (Although the figure IS a Mon Calamari, it is NOT in fact Admiral Ackbar, but just a Mon Cal Merc).

I'm back to work on this one. It'll be a multi-layered model. I've set up the sheets in Photoshop and now I can start adding shade, weathering and textures.

I'll sleep when I can afford to! ;D I got a lot of work done on this yesterday, setting up the sheets, adding the usual layers of weathering and shading, and a base texture. I've decided to keep the 3D tongue (the thing you hitch the horses to), but it'll be optional. I'll see if I can find room for a 2D version. I probably can. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about extras such as canvas covers and cargo. I may add a third sheet in order to add those. Yeah, I probably should.

I've found some good reference photos, so I'm feeling more confident about adding a couple types of canvas covers.
I'm going to include a flat-topped cover resting on top of posts at the corners of the wagon bed. I'll also try a rounded cover, and see if it needs any sort of interior reinforcement. I hope not. I don't think it will, once you bend it into the right shape. I'll try to include some "tattered" overlays for the canvas sections.
Adding the covers means adding another sheet, but that's okay. There might be some extra room for crates and barrels.
Lumber, logs and hay bales, however, will only be available separately! ;D

I think I'm done with page 2, which has all of the side wall options. There's about 30 layers on there, so there's no shortage of choices.

I'm really struggling with this one for some reason. It's not a tough model to texture, or anything like that. I just keep getting stalled when it comes to actually designing the iron fittings and details like that. I might need to let this one sit for a few more days until I get over this little bit of graphic artist's block with regard to this model.

I'm back to work on this! I added the iron fittings and those other details I was struggling with. The main wagon parts are all finished, and now I can start adding the canvas covers.

I'm just about done with the wagon's main body, and I'm starting on the wagon covers now. I'm also thinking about two-wheeled carts in a similar style.

Now that my games are in playtesting, I'm going to fire up the Photoshop and get back to work on this model.
With my new $1.95 price point, I'm probably going to release this model in two parts: the wagon body will be the first release, followed by the optional canvas covers. I'm curious to see how this approach works out.

Making steady progress on the canvas covers for this one. If I can stay focused on this, it could be ready in a couple of days.
After some more thought, I probably won't break this up into two products. Instead, I may go with a $2.95 price for new releases of this size and utility, and keep the $1.95 price for most of my 2009-2010 products.

So far so very awesome. I'd agree it would be worth it to have all the bits in one package. I'd advocate for the canvas covers to have the multiple textures as mentioned, but I'd also like to see a couple different heights, like one cover just over the brim or so and another stacked way high. The high stack would be the hay and the conestoga, I reckon. I also don't mind 2d wheels. A couple texture layers there would be good as well, like fancy painted spoke wheels and plank wheels, for instance, and maybe even modern pnumatic wheels.

I'm sticking with a medieval/fantasy look, so you won't see anything modern or western. There are two types of canvas covers -- a flat-topped cover supported by four vertical beams, and a rounded cover. Both are appropriate for the period, and the rounded top could be used in a western setting. However, I'm avoiding spoked wheels.

My issue with spoked wheels isn't because of the period. It's because they'd be hard to cut out, and I don't want to fill in the empty space between the spokes with black.
The wheels on that Viking wagon might look okay, but I've spent far too long on this model and I really just need to get it published so I can move on to other stuff.

I understand. You only make money when it is on the market.
Have you considered getting this one out there and then putting a re-texture version out later on? I'm sure that there would be a substantial percent of original purchasers that would also purchase the second.
I'm just thinking out loud.
