Another one of my new projects is an Inventor's House, which is going to be a funky tower-like dwelling with some creative architecture.
Working in 2D, it's tough to keep track of how all the parts fit together so I really need to print this one out and see it in 3D. It's too freaky for interior-access; to keep the complexity level down I'm going to release this as an exterior-only model.

Finished the line-work. Just need to print it out, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow when my printer is supposed to arrive. This was a challenge to design in 2D, and I'll be surprised if it all goes together in 3D flawlessly.

This kinda reminds me of the old days with your free models. Your current line-up doesn't have specialty shops. Every town needs a butcher, yet in the commercial line, I don't think you have one.
I'll be glad to see this

You know, I think about those kinds of shops a lot, but I consider them to be "rainy day" projects. I used to think of churches the same way. If I ever get stuck -- well, I should never get stuck. I can always create a rat-catcher's hut or an engraver's workshop or a coaching inn or an armorer or a tannery.

Weaponry R Us ...
Those type of models would not be big sellers, but they do flesh out the scene. Maybe a signage and prop set to convert some of your other buildings into specialty shops?
XB's magic emporium, etc?

Here's the paper test for the Inventor's House. It took quite a while to put this one together, so I'd recommend making this a weekend project where you cut out all the pieces on Saturday and put them together on Sunday. Honestly, I'm exhausted from building this, and I still have to do all the texturing. But I'm really happy with the way this turned out, and relieved that I only had to make two or three very minor alterations to my original files to make sure everything fit together.

This looks amazing! I imagine modding it to add a lightning rod on that open deck, turning it into a mad inventor's house

I was going to use that for the catapult to launch the hang glider

Could that little top building be made into a round observatory?

I might include some kind of telescope to sit out on the platform if I can get my head around the geometry, but at this point I'm too far along to make any changes to the structure.

Tommygun, if you ever want to help me with geometry for stuff like that, I'm happy to send over some free models (and of course the finished version of this one, and an artist's credit). I could still add an observatory as an option.
This one is set up at 300dpi, and I use cut-and-fold lines that are 3 pixels wide. If you can design something with a footprint (diameter?) of about 3" x 3", and keep the height to about 3", I'll use it.

I can think of a way to do it in two pieces. How soon do you need it by and does it need to be made as a transparent layer? Also I only have Gimp and Inkscape (which I'm barely familiar with).

I can see how to make it in two pieces, now that you mention it. You've helped already! I might not need your help with the cut-and-fold lines after all, but the offer still stands. (In any case, I'm excited about the possibility of adding domes to my repertoire.)
I don't think I'd need it any sooner than Saturday, and I'll save you the ink and paper by doing the test print myself.
I design everything in 2D using Photoshop, probably just how you create your models in Gimp. If you can provide a 300dpi JPG or PNG, I can work with it. I prefer a transparent layer, but I can easily remove a white background.
Please don't feel obligated. I understand that my models might not be of any use to you, and my compensation might only be as valuable as Zimbabwe money. We're all busy with our own stuff. If it feels like work, don't do it.

That looks... very interesting. Might fit as a manufactory in a steampunk game, just going by the outside. The Auld Grump

Actually it didn't take too long. I only had to remake two parts. Except for the telescope the whole thing will fit inside an imaginary 3 inch cube. Just PM me an Email address if you think it is something you can use. If not, that's OK too. It was good practice.

That's too cool! You really knocked that one out fast and made it look great. Could not be happier.
Just to be sure, I would have no problem with you using that geometry for your own projects.
PM sent.

What is it about Pringles cans and papercraft? It's like they were made for each other.
Tommygun, I'm putting together your model now and started to feel weird about making any money off your great design. So what I want to do is offer the fully-textured observatory as a FREE stand-alone model that will also work as an optional part of the Inventor's House. I'll release the Observatory as a free Dave Graffam Model but make it very clear that the geometry is yours -- copyright and all. You okay with that?

Finished the observatory. Tricky build, and I wouldn't recommend it for smaller scales, but it looks great on the platform. I initially thought it would replace the shed, but it looks even better next to it. That leaves a 1" x 4" walkway for your minis, and makes my job pretty easy. I thought I was going to have to rework the railings and some other stuff, but I can add the observatory option with a single texture layer. Easy.
Texturing starts tonight.

I have a theory that the Pringles chip is in fact a form of papercraft.
About the Observatory, ether choice is fine, so free is OK with me.
