The theme for this months HOARD is Sci-fi CiviliansThis can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category.

Day 2, 50 views and still no entries - time to change that ;D. What are SciFi-Civilians ? Members of galactic civilizations ? Well, that's everyone, robots and intelligent machines included. Should we exclude Armed Forces ? Military ? Police ? I fetch my beloved "MegaTraveller" Players' Manual and enrich the list of Character Career Types with some brainstorming notes: 1. Army/Marines/Navy armed forces of different species, tech levels and weaponry 2. Barbarian low-tec, brute strength inhabitant 3. Belter/Miner (Gambler) mining for minerals, eg. of asteroids/gas etc. Daredevil, high-risk character 4. Bureaucrat the pale, tall, thin AI-loving guy, laughter is rare 5. Diplomat/Politician smart, chatty, elegant. High-value clothing. 6. Doctor he has seen it all: every tentacle of the universe. He is confident to heal everything with drugs, bots, computers. Sarcastic. 7. Flyer/Pilot he loves his racing vehicle. Serious sportsman. 8. Hunter collecting alien heads, earns fame and money 9. Law Enforcer his eyes would make you silent. Black robe. Majestic. 10. Merchant funny, overweight guy - he always talks to you - and you loose money. Rich, very rich - and he shows (colors). 11. Noble aristocracy is beauty, dignity, money, influence. White, golden, silver, black, blue ... monochrome elegance. 12. Pirate fierce, grinning - his clothing a collection of alien, exotic "things". 13. Rogue the cyberpunked streetfighter. He plays with knives. 14. Sailor high-tec aqua-specialist. Controls entire submarines. 15. Scientist this man is brain. Decent clothing or alternative grunge type. Maybe a selfmade, half-mad engineer of warmachines or clones. Or serious thinker of the unthinkable (enigma of the cosmos). 16. Scout High-tec suit, every gadget prolongs his life on the frontier of the galaxy. Hope this helps, everything as alien or female ;D format possible ... Those are Player Characters/NPCs. What about the guys in the background ? (table dancer, bartender, musician, drug users, I know: Star Wars) EDIT: so dayjob-people ... 1. "little old blue-grey lady with tentacles motoring along on her power scooter" (by verminking) 2. blue hologram of a hot human dancer (it's cheaper, but somewhat defect) 3. multi-arm kraken bartender, serving multiple colorful drinks at once 4. bar-musicians (strange aliens with sparkling high-tec instruments, very slim) 5. drug-smoking huge, muscular alien (with computer-controlled pipe apparatus) 6. insectoid spy in dark robe 7. yelling human police officer in combat suit 8. human anti-riot police squad (heavy protection) 9. alien thugs/punks 10. human wizkid/hacker (mobile micro-computers on his jacket) 11. every imaginable alien bypasser (crawling, flying, jumping, hovering, running, whatever) 12. starship repair squad (human engineers with devices) I stop here. Feel free to expand endlessly ... .

You are on the right track. Looking for characters that will help flesh out a campaign on another planet. Your closing list would be more than welcome. You can't have enough interplanetary bartenders and dancing girls... not to mention the pedestrians you'd meet on the streets or in the rural areas. I keep getting this picture in my head of the little old blue lady with tentacles motoring along on her power scooter

That's a good one, verminking ! So you are looking for really original, funny, exotic alien-type pedestrians, workers and such ? Puh, that's not easy ... .

Hello all! Here's my submission for the hoard: an alien spaceport technician in 28mm scale. Years ago I drew some aliens in skateboards, so when I read this thread I thought I could adapt one of those character designs. It was sketched, drawn and shaded in Gimp. I've been test printing and fiddling with it in my free time for the last few days, and now I think it is in a state that is reasonable to display I was not sure how to submit so I put the image as an attachment to this post. When I have more time, I think I'll try to make a set of these (for instance, an alien with some sort of scanning device, another carrying a toolbox and so on). I never gave much thought about why they would have that tentacle thing on their head but I'd say that it's their equivalent to human hair, and this figure's is about as long as it gets. So I could have other figures with shorter tentacles, and ones decorated with metal rings around them etc.

Oh yeah, gilius. That's really nice & neat ! I like the overall shading, this funny face (I have to think of Bart Simpson !?) and especially his glowing display device with those tiny "calculations". I love such details. I thought to do something in a very similar (line-art) style, maybe some musicians or a space bar set, but it's a question of time.

I did a recolor of the Graywolf Space Opera Enforcers set, I just never submitted it to the previous Hoards. I'll finish the set (I think 2 or 3 figures are missing) and release it to the hoard now.

Great stuff, hackbarth ! I've seen those minis somewhere else on Cardboard Warriors. Always wanted to imitate this (time saving) comic-style.

These minis are from Greywolf, he has them in True type Font format in his site. greywolf.critter.net/fonts.htmInstall the font, fire your favorite graphic program (GIMP in my case) and write ABCD...+enter+abcd... Then you have all the characters, fronts and backs. They don't align properly, so a little fidgeting may be necessary. And then its just a matter of choosing colors. He made may genres, from Space Opera to Supers to Cliffhangers to Furry (he illustrated the previous version of Ironclaw/Jadeclaw RPGs)

hackbarth: yes, I know them. I've seen YOUR recoloring somewhere on this forum. I admire this flowing old-school ink-pen art. Actually it's very hard to do that - with a real pen or Inkscape simulation doesn't matter. You need a lot of practice in anatomy and you cannot hide any mistakes with such a few lines ... . @reivaj: go for your desire . I am curious how this will turn out ... .

Any objection if I place an off theme figure here? I have just drawn a diamond golem - my first 2d figure ever made for gaming.

Parduz: Gosh! You got me, parduz ! It's her Big Hair, I suppose. Yes, I am that old. I find it sometimes hard to escape from the 80ties style-wise. If I ever get this babe done, I'll welcome your sharp eyes to detect any disfunctional limbs, parduz ! gilius: Thanks for the appreciation . Yes, Desdemona has a very similar outfit, though she is more into PulpFictionVamp. eddnic: very cool form and colors ! Did you use some photo-textures of real diamonds ? I could even imagine Kirk fighting such a guardian ... . Ok, guys. I am off for a few days. To entertain you I show you the rest. Some "placeholders" under her feet and still sketchy. She will be all digital blue, of course. Have fun ...

Eheh, nice! Talking for myself, i'm never gone away from mid/late '80 idea of "sexy". I'm born in 1970, and I think my hormones got a sort of imprinting like the newborn ganders For this reason, i truly hate that boot with a brick under the feet. High heels or sport shoes are almost the only shoes i could see for your figure If I ever get this babe done, I'll welcome your sharp eyes to detect any disfunctional limbs, parduz ! Well, you don't know what you're asking for

Parduz, we are the same age. Stone Age ;D. Those bricks under her feet are unintentional, they should be stilettos. I only put them in to get her height right. I understand your preference, parduz, but I for myself WANT BOOTS. Black boots with zippers ... ;D. Well, you don't know what you're asking for I know ... (Oh Lord, have mercy ...) Last comment before I get back. Cheerio !

I just want to mention that I don't consider my humor "German" but rather "endearingly strange". Anyway, moving on... I'd vote for boots with little to no heels, that's the way I prefer them, but then again who am I to argue and limit the range of minis avaliable. I like what I've seen thus far, though. The diamond golem looks goof for a first, it could do with some shading but I don't know how that would affect the texture. My main concern would be that he doesn't look that civil .

Civil does not matter. I'm not sure 'texturing' diamonds makes sense. I do agree with a point earlier that making the line between the sword and body a bit bolder (not as bold as the border) would enhance he visual of the sword, making it more distinct.

Thanks for the comments. I have added some shadow beneath the sword to make it stand out a little bit. Also, I have tried shading but the result is not very good.

Thanks for the comments. I have added some shadow beneath the sword to make it stand out a little bit. Also, I have tried shading but the result is not very good. Well, with all that diamond reflective/refracting faces that golem should'nt be able to cast shadows on itself I'd make the sword lines even more thick, maybe with a blue tone instead of black. Then I'd try with different reflection, instead of shadows... i mean: i suppose you can made a "layer" over your figure, and draw semi-transparent shapes. If you can do this, then i'd draw a almost white shape over the upper part of the sword, and a bluish shape over the lower part. This should give the illusion of a glass surface reflecting different light source, but still made of diamonds.... If it works, you may try with other body parts.
