The theme for this months HOARD is Halloween Wars! (rarrr!) This can be any sort of miniature on the above theme or feel free to submit miniatures off theme. If you submit a figure, they must include both front and rear art, have a proper trimming outline, and include instructions for multi-part models. Recolors and figure mods are encouraged, and even uncolored designs are welcome. No nudity or sexuality, but bloody gory and horrifying is encouraged. If you have questions about how to design your figures, like formats, resolution, and stuff like that, see the HOARD GUIDELINES in this forum category. Entries for the Hoard will be accepted until the last day of September.

Not sure If I make it for this month, but is there a preferred format for entry files? Transparent background PNG, Layered PSD, PDF or other? BTW While I totally understand the ban on sexual themes, I think I'll never understand why nudity is considered more damaging for minor minds than blood and gore. (Sorry for the little offtop)

Pencils done?....Check! Inks done?....Check! Scanned and ready for digital manipulation?....Check!
"In the dark and uncertain times of the Victorian era, forces of evil plot world domination and destruction in equal measure. Violence is rampant and death is never further away than a sudden scream in the night. However, there are those that choose to stand in the breach against the Darkness.
Victims of science gone horribly wrong, misfits, abhorrent creations, and sufferers of disease, these men have taken it upon themselves to protect the very society that shuns them. For as scary as they may be, they know that what goes bump in the night is much more frightening..."

I started working on my first "ground up figure", that is not using some one else's art for the Halloween Wars hoard. An infantry fighter with a Skull Cannon. I started by forcing my son to model for me then I did some work in GIMP Then I started working on the back I just noticed one of my mistakes, the part of the gun that should be visible between his legs. but something else is off and I cant figure it out. Can you help me please? Thanks Cadia

something else is off and I cant figure it out. I noticed that the backside face isn't properly facing "partially away". You could simplify the face to be full profile, then the reverse could be identical...

Also, the backside foot needs to be fixed. As it is now the reverse looks like he's shooting behind his back.

yeah I caught the foot too. I will try changing the angle on the face, eliminating the second lens on the goggles. Something about the shoulders or arms isnt right either but I cant place it.

Three things about the arms:
1) If we're seeing the "front" of the arm, make a crease line where the arm bends. If we're seeing the "back" of the arm, don't (or at least, not so much). Your back image makes it look like the rear arm is bending towards us, but it goes behind the figure.
2) The hand gripping the front of the weapon on the back looks like the wrong side of the hand. I can see all sorts of fingers that I shouldn't be able to see.
3) I'd add a seam to the shirt on the other shoulder. The curve of the seam will help add some depth to the figure, and give the illusion if the figure facing in one direction.
The head... Some shading on the neck, or a slight change in the hairline so there's a bit more of the back of the head on one side might help, too.
Cool work though! I still haven't gotten around to even scanning in my first miniature sketch (I'm hoping I can defeat laziness in time for a future papercut competition). I personally appreciate the inspirational posts of folks showing their progress on stuff. It helps me a lot.

which hand do you mean? Im not following you. In the Front view, both hands look ok, the extended arm, shows a thumb, and the the one near the main body of the gun shows knuckles. Do you mean the lines for the knuckles are too long? In the Back view, I removed the thumb and tried to eliminate some of the shadowing effect.
I see what you mean, I have the lines on the elbows on the wrong view.
thanks Cadia

So, here's what I did - I'll let you decide if any ideas are worth it... 1) I noticed the front of his face showed the entire front of his glasses, so I made the back NOT show that too. 2) I also moved his nose to extend past the edge of his face, rather than in front on the back side. 3) I moved his ear forward on the back, and made there be more hair 4) I fudged with his chin a bit on the back 5) I added a seam to his other shoulder on both sides. 6) I added some lines for his elbow on the back image 7) I added some arm creases on the front side (removed them from the back side) 8) I did a goofy job of it, but I added lines to the back of his hand that more naturally follow the direction of fingers. On the original, there were subtle lines that didn't seem to follow where fingers would be there. Hopefully that shows what I was talking about better. I think the collar should change a bit, too. If you can, try to make it come down less on the back. Most shirt collars would sit higher in the back than in the front. I'm not sure if what I'm done is an improvement or not. You're now taking advice from someone who hasn't made standees himself!

Oh I know what is bugging me. On the back of the image, the arm - towards the shoulder - looks like it's in front of the body. Compare this to my previous post: I'm just hacking now - I'll leave you to it.

Oh I know what is bugging me. On the back of the image, the arm - towards the shoulder - looks like it's in front of the body. Thats a nice improvement. I think more of the arm could be shown as well. You could add some skin color over top of the shirt, while also moving the sleeve seam in a bit farther. Also the pants could have some pockets added, and also a ... a butt line? I'm sure there has to be a more acceptable term for it, but you know what I mean. I did a quick mockup in MS Paint to demonstrate. I wasn't going for quality here.

mproteau is right about the collar. It should go up in the back instead of down...
Have fun! Steve

Hey Squirmydad, I was reading the guidelines and saw where we only submit 1 figure per horde. I completely understand about time limits and the amount of work it takes to do a hoard. I am actually working on 5 figures and some other stuff in this theme and have no problem hosting the other figures and stuff myself like suggested. Its something I want to add to over time anyway. What do I need to do to qualify for my own sub-board so I can start showing wips and such? Also, if I can help out with the horde in someway to ease your burden, I'd be be glad to, just shoot me a pm. Thanks!

(cough) link (cough) Only one figure? I need to amend those rules, I think three is a better limit. Help is always appreciated, October 1st will be the gathering and collating day. Ways to help; 1) Collect the images, put them into a One-Monk layout template (which I can send), then send that to me or another helper to build cut-files. 2) Build cut files in a One Monk studio template (which I can send), then send that to me or another helper to... 3).... cut, assemble, and photograph. I Have a One Monk Hoard layout file of the blue background gradient for the photograph. 4) Me: Upload pic and package. Pick one.

Thanks bro, I appreciate it! THAT'S AWESOME!! I can volunteer to do 1 & 3 without any trouble at all. I'm super rubbish at making cutfiles,so if we can get a cutfile guru to pick up that end we should be good. And, as I hand cut all my figures anyway, I wont need them for the cut, assemble, photograph step. (My big ham hands always mess up the figures and get them all gluey if I cut them out before gluing.) All I would need is the One Monk layout template, and the One Monk blue background gradient.
Also, very cool hat in the facebook photos!

All right! Well the good news is that Squirmydad raised the limit on horde figures to three!! Huzzah! So for the horde this month I'll start with some of the League of Abnormal Gentlemen, Paranormal Investigators. First is the local bureau chief, Frankenstein. He's a big guy and measures in at 47mm to the eye. Shelley said he was over 8 ft. in the book so I went with that. I'm still tweaking it so he isn't completely finished, but good enough to share. Still working on anatomy and perspective, but it'll get better as I go. I'll be doing at least 6 or 7 of these guys and then several groups of baddies. (No, NOT Mitchell and Webb), and some vehicles. I'm a big fan of old school horror in Books, movies and especially Relic Radio podcasts, so I went with these for the horde and near future. Nothing like working on paper minis while listening to radio programs from the 30's - 70's.

I am submitting for the first time here, so any advice or instruction is appreciated. This is a drawing I found on Creative Commons (courtesy of tzunhgaor). It said it was a public domain licence, but I think credit is due. I did the back from the silhouette in illustrator. This is my first ever attempt at shading on a computer, so tell me what you think. I am trying to get the confidence to post my own designs, but they all look flat and unshaded. I am most concerned with how to do the shading so I picked a "simple" shaped golem to start with. Oh yeah, it is totally a costume
