Just want to add some minor stuff like the lock bar on the inside. And hopefully next week I will find a way to add rocks and grass for the ground ... I just got back from a mini-vacation and I thought about this while I was out and about. Here are two pics of rocks and soil from Talkeetna, Ak.

Completely forgot to post my progress here yesterday. So here comes ... A little teaser with the completed walls and simple gates! And a little more close up. Starting to work on the "fancy" gates this week. Unfold is done. Now on to texturing ... Chris

Working on the feedback I got and updated my rickshaw model. Improved the textures and made some colour variations ... The upper left is the old model.

I definitely like the one that looks like it would fit in better 'in the neighborhoods' where it has seen a lot of use

It has happened! I made my first video When oldschooldm showed me his take on flat-fold for the gates and walls I was really surprised. I did not think it would be possible in an elegant way, but he did it again! So here is a video of me trying his approach with the small gate on youtube.

Pics of the textures big, big, big gate ... As this kind of gate usually is used in connection with stone foundation walls I have added ladder and door to get up to the upper floor. Detail of the large door. I want to make the doors exchangleable (open/closed). I am thinking of putting the door on a base (almost like a mini or a little building itself) and then you can take them out and replace them. Does that sound OK or is there some standard I don't know how to handle doors?

Have been lazy posting progress here, so here comes small special gate (easy version) and the beauty version! So now all the special gates are completed Today I was working on cleaning up the files for release, starting with the walls and standard gates. I remembered that on facebook a user requested making optional smaller firing holes. So I did today. They are in the same grid position, except they are lower (from 20-30mm height to 15-25mm) and a little smaller (75%).

Playing around with texturing the ground ... Going in the right direction?

Definitely a good direction for outside the palace/castle, but seems a bit rough for inside the castle walls

I am still working on how to control where the more sandy areas go and where the rocks go. I want to have the rocks close to the walls only. The above is a more stylized rocks approach. This on the other hand is using the pic squirmydad posted above. So a little more on the realistic side. I am mixing it with my "sand" ground texture using alpha layer so that the way through a gate would have more of the sand and the outsides are more the rocks. Not perfect by far but I am just trying to experiment what looks good. I like the stylized better because I think it's very hard to make good looking realistic textures. In the end they always look kind of ... well, unreal.

I think "real" textures are a good starting point, but to make them work on your tabletop playground you need to add tone, depth hue, highlight, shade, and stylize them so they play well with the homemade "unreal" textures.

I like what I have come up with so far (texture wise) but will play around more. For the castle I just want a couple of rocks/pebbles close to the walls so I hope I will be able to conjure an additional optional layer for that. Anyway ... I have come so far with the instructions. These are the "models" of the photo-shoot :-) Only the large special gate missing!

Almost at the end of the Gates and Walls ... after struggling (small improvements but not yet what I want) with the textures for a while I wanted to complete the missing removable doors. The doors are like mini figures with their own bases which one can insert, exchange and remove as needed. The archways are in the 1inch grid. The doors have their own frame and are matching "true" dimensions better in relation to a figure. The door in the front (lying) is the simple version without the frame and base. Work fine too, but if you want an open door I think the stability of the better version will yield a better module for game play.

Completed the curved corners unfold. Test build looks good and actually almost as easy as the straight version.

Starting preparations of the final chapter of the Castle Builder series ... Began working on the top level. This is the standard roof. Below you see a white prototype of the special roof with that raised area in the middle. Just for fun I dragged it all onto the living room table where I have the space to take a photo of it all. It will be a bigature! The tower is dwarfed by the full five level keep! Although I am guessing a three level version will be what most gamers will build max, like the 10 year old green roofed prototype. Very happy with the refinement of the roof when comparing it to the old prototypes.

Picking up the pace for the castle. Working on the top roof layers. Got the unfolds tested and started on the textures. I made the angle of the intermediate roof less steep than the old ones (see them below). It looked like a stave church. The new angle is much better. Being reminded of the Ninja roof walking addon! So many roof things to do

Since this is a larger building, I'm really glad that the walls slide into a frame on top of the roof beneath. I would need to be able to dismantle it for storage and moving

The walls will have option for fold flat. For the roof I have not found a good way to connect but I think some of you guys said it would be ok to just stack them. The ornament fish on the top roof are removable as not to get damaged during transport. The triangle rooflets are also removeable. I think even a large keep should be fairly easy to move.
And I am really looking forward to get feedback and pics how big gamers will actually build the keep!

Just realized I didn't show the latest update to my roof progress here! I was away for a week but started working on the wall textures this week. I finished all the outside wall textures and was able to do a test build for the next level today. It's just the outside walls textured but still gave me enough ideas on what to watch out for when continuing with the rest of the walls parts.
