My /home/ town is Colchester, in the UK - but I moved away in the mid-90's. Here's a video of the town centre (from YouTube, of course) www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7aP5D4sgB8Being the oldest recorded town in Britain and the Roman capital /before/ London, a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and a load of others I should know, but have forgotten, there are quite a few museums and other places of interest. Probably. It's also changed a lot since I was last there (2001), so I don't reckognise most of it...

Medieval? I've seen houses looking just like that in the Lake District/Cumbria about 20 years ago!

I don't know how to post pictures here from my phone, but you should see the stuff I am sketching! What sort of phone is it? You should be able to hook it up to your PC with a USB cable.

I gave the USS Weetabix another bash (after, what, 35 years...). It was a fiddly as I remember it, but this time it went together better, which considering how wibbly-wobbly this one is, explains why I burnt the last one: set fire to it and threw it out of my bedroom window to watch it spiral down in flames trailing smoke ( two years before they did it Wrath of Khan*** Correction: Search for Spock!.): "My God, Bones... what have I done?" With the help of my kids...

La pièce de résistance: A bit more complicated than planned, but I'll post a simpler one for the generic Constitution class shortly...

Klingons off the starboard bow! I used the Weetabix model as the main guideline and a few images from around the net for a little bit more detail. Here's the original ODT file and a PDF:

Me too, been there, got the t-shirt... A few years back, I was out of work for just over 2½ years. Making models from the likes of dagobahdave was one of the few things that helped keep my spirits up.
Congratulations and good luck!

Okay, don't knock it until you've tried it... And I'm apt to try anything I'm now working on some Klingons, so will give it a go. Thanks for the tip.

I picked up the Cadet edition of Star Fleet Battles the other day (freebie from DriveThrouRPG). While in the "reading through the rules" phase, I thought I'd have a bash at making some ship markers to replace the small square counters that come with the game. I thought about a 2½D model of the Hermes/Saladin class ships. It couldn't be too big or else I'd end up with about 1½ finished models and it couldn't be too small or else sausage-fingers here would be able to put it together. Conviniently, at 1/5000th scale, the 127 metre saucer is an inch. Just right! I printed up a sheet of eight with four of them with solid black background. The first one, with solid white background looked OKish but I still tried it with an all black background, again OK-ish. I then tried cutting away all the excess card and extending the bases to give a bit more height off of the table. I then got bored and "wrecked" a couple. I now have a small fleet! First two with solid backgrounds around engine nascelle. Extended bases and wreck markers. The black edging doesn't really work, so for the next ones, I'll keep it white or paint it the main colour of the model. I guess I better knock up something/one to shoot at

With pieces from the floow tiles and wall panel sheets: The (still under construction) loading deck of the Soviet Research Vessel Lev Davidovich Landau with Soviet Naval Infantry facing off against unkown aliens... If anyone else actually uses these scenery bits, I would like to see some pictures.

I near the city of Oulu, about 200 km south of the Arctic Circle. Once did a load of research into the 1808-09 Suomen Sota, but ended up giving all the infor away - it was hard copy as most of the stuff came from old books and magazines. It's dead easy finding Winter War stuff, as to me it seems the average Finn isn't really interested in history and nothing really happened before 1939...

Better late than never... The real name's Robert (Rob, Robbie or b*st*rd, but never Bob!). I hail from the UK, but am firmly entrenched in the tropical paradise of northern Finland.
In real life, I'm an engineer knocking together environmental monitoring stations, but in my free time I try to play skirmish level solo wargames. I'm now tinkering with creating my own figures, but since I haven't used paint and ink seriously for about 25 years, it's slow going.

Our older cat, Maisa came to investigate what was going on next to her bed (which is on my desk between the PC and the printer.) Nostalgia time ... probably more for UK members than me, but definitely a trip down memory lane.
cerealoffers.com/
The Doctor Who ones I remember and were exactly what I had in mind when I did my cybermen. If there was Weetabix with the Dr Who promo, I'd nag my mum to buy them, even if we had the cereal at home. I'd have the box chopped up with in about 10 minutes of getting home! The Star Trek Motion Picture ones are the last ones I remember doing. Though, I only made the Enterprise and Klingon cruiser. Since those scans aren't too bad, time a for a nostalgia trip... However, I don't remember these ones:

Stone too cold??? Tell that to the Romans Remember under-floor heating! You could go quite to town with a public bath house - marble floor and stone columns. It'll look good next to La Maison Derrière.

A brothel. Not sure how different it would look from a regular house, but I guess it depends on the locals' attitude on how obvious it's trade is...

I make all my models at 8x11 300dpi So, you still use a rasta/pixel format? From your's and cowboyleland's comments, I see where I was going wrong with GIMP. I was working with figures close to the final size (actually twice the final size) and a too low resolution - my GIMPs default is 96 dpi because I had been mostly editting images for my website. I'll give GIMP another bash, but start with bigger images and better resolution. Thanks gents!

I agree that using a higher resolution prints up just fine if you keep the figures as-is, but in the past, when I've tried to rescale pixel images, even only by a few percent, they seem to go fuzzy. Though I do admit to having a basic bog-standard printer (HP Photosmart C4380) and I usually only use the regular quality setting - I save high quality photo for photos.
I guess one reason I like Draw is because coming from the technical drawing side, you can right click on any object and edit any item property, such as height/width, rotation, fill, stroke and so on. Sheer laziness...

I guess the learning curve is pretty steep. I followed the video and still ended up with pixelated images. The other one still requires Inkscape and doesn't really deal with complex images. I'll stick with Draw for a while as I know I can use that, and have found a few tweaks to speed things up a bit (not a lot, though). I'm now playing around with Inkscape on it's own. But in the meantime, MKII: PDF: Robodudes MKII.pdf (231.72 KB)

That's really good! Bet it burns quite nicely too Not only do I appreciate the artwork with these 3D paper figures, but the skill of the person who put it together: I've never been able to handle the tiny bits that need to be cut, curved, glued and so on. My sausage fingers just can't handle them

First printing For some reason, I didn't line the front and backs up as well as I normally do, so the black border is thicker on the left of the figures where I coloured the excess white in with black. I didn't bother 2½Ding them, as I knew I'd find more than a few areas to fix and improve, such as: The eyes need to be smaller and according to my daughter, I need to add the "tears" (I didn't add them because I thought they wouldn't show, but orders are orders...) Also, the holey thing at the top of the head could be a bit smaller. I think the next batch will also be a lighter grey/blue, so they're more silvery that grey.

Hope that you are adding border/outline as separate layer (so you can add/remove or adjust it later)? Yeps! Actually, LibreOffice Draw doesn't have layers, every line or shape is a separate entity so can be moved around and up and down on it's own or grouped with others. Which is handy, because when I made the figure wider, I just increased the width of the whole figure. This made the circles into ovals. I can go back and correct them individually. Mark II: It printed up just the right size. I made it 30 mm as in the RoboDude** is supposed to be taller than normal people. I'll follow up the GIMP/Vector thing and will start trying to play with Inkscpe again, because although I'm pretty comfortable with Draw, once you start to get a lot of detail in an image, it starts to slow down something chronic. ** Any similarity between RoboDude and a certain creation copyrighted by the BBC are purely coincidental and for educational/training purposes only... (Saunters off casually, whistling)

I've had a look for vectors with GIMP, but it seems either not possible or very difficult. cowboyleland, can you point to a tutorial? I tried exporting the drawing to SVG and opening it in Inkscape, but the whole image was a single entity and I couldn't figure out how to edit it. I've played around with the proportions and come up with this: The black border seems to improve things, makes it stand out more. I haven't had a chance to test print it yet, as I'm currently at the Mrs's dad's place. I'll give it a bash later.
