Rat Men have been a big request here and elsewhere. I can't help but think though that they have been well-represented by the big Gee Double You.
Is there something different you are looking for in Rat Men?

Paper for starters  Skaven are cool but they are expensive. And it would be cool to see Ratmen as something other than plague worshipping creatures. It would be cool to see some kind of Ratmen that live in sewers, use short swords and rapiers. Come in more than brown for colour, Maybe use Indian weapons like that Katara, Pata, Kopis blades, Madu, Chakram, and Urimi (metal whip sword). Just a thought. |

I used to have a bunch of Ratmen in my old Fantasy Hero campaign called Ratkin. They were more like Secret of Nimh rats.
Hmm... OK, today I've been drawing elves. All kinds of elves.

The ratmen in my original DnD campaign in the late-70s were based on Baroque Dutch (around the time of the 30 Years' War), and they weren't relentlessly evil. Some were good, some were bad, just like people. They tended to be fat with small extremities. They dressed in the foppish style of the Baroque. The males of consequence were always armed with rapiers. Infantry was armed with pikes, halbards and arquebuses. Their armies would include artillery trains. I don't remember what their cavalry rode on. Perhaps great weasels or stoats. Have fun! Steve |

This different view on ratmen is really interesting. My main reference for ratmen is the one from that law firm that also produces games. While I admit that the concept of ratmen as scavengers has appeal to me, seeing them as cosmopolitan and using finesse weapons and tactics is even better. I think it fits very well with black gunpowder fantasy...

I tend to think of the old show that used to run on PBS... REDWALL. In that movie, the characters weren't ratmen, but more mice... the way the Steve is discribing them, I can't help but think of the movie The Tale od D'espereux.
I don't know... I guess I miss the catfolk race.
I would like to see something between the Kzinti from the Star Trek cartoon, and the ThunderCats!
Either way, I used to run them (called 'Spedecians' in my games, with their leader who had a lion's head, and eagles wings. He basically was a Sphinx, but held many near-religious characteristics. His name, Avalon.)
Just saying... I will get back to other projects now... ;D

Catfolk and Wolfman!
Wolf-people can be a layer of more traditional D&D Hiena-people. (can't remember the name)
Cat folk would be great for medieval and SF! Mrrshan, Kzinti, Caitians...

You know, Hackbarth, you and I think alike... but when you mentioned layers, it hit me, LAYER it! One layer could look like a Bengal tiger, one a hyena, one a cheetah...
I know there is a HUGE difference between cats and wolves, but let's think of the Street Fighter character, Blanca... forgive the spelling... he was green and beastly and had a huge orange mane.
Do a figure with cantered legs and stocky frame, with busy hair. The face could be cat-like... if not lionesque. Then just throw the fur patterns on it, and there you go!
Maybe a set of 10... 5 with swords, spears and bows, for example, and 5 that looked a little more high-tech.
This is inspiring me to draw a sketch to show what I am thinking...

OK... Elves are designed.. I just need to figure out the freebie/bonus/easteregg thingy for this set... I think the cat/rat/dog people are a bit out of the realm of what I'm doing with this line to be honest. I'm focusing a bit more on the fantasy that was out in the 70s/early 80s. I'm thinking more Tolkien and D&D/Runequest and less Citadel/Games Workshop. I am considering an anthropomorphic pulp line though...  |

Wolfen were my favourite nemeses from Palladium. I had some Wolfen hunters hunting down some PCs once. It was awesome.

Thanks HP! I really appreciate that. The book was based on my first Ed d&d campaign. I also think that making that book made me a much better artist. I am finding it much easier to draw these figures since working in those books.
In other news, the elf and bugbear sets are really coming along.

Okumarts, you know i love your style, and i'm feeling bad saying this but..... i find the male elf face not elfish (is this a word?) at all...it is just too much human. And.... are your sure about the "inside pointing feet" of that female elf? I recon it's a common pose on girls... it is'nt much "epic"....
The lower ones are just awesome.

I LOVE the way that Parduz can offer suggestions and touch on points others may not notice, yet still bring it to your attention without making you feel belittled... He has a knack at this without offending you. (He is normally spot-on)! As is the case frequently, I tend to agree with him. You are an amazing artist... and I think that the elf in question shows an innocence that would be great as a character (the novice apprentice turned would-be heroine). The way I see your sets, I look at them as a bunch of soldiers that are basically troops that can be generated 100 times over. You also throw in a few characters like this one, that are the main characters. I can't say enough good things about your work. You drew her this way, and her still and pose tells a whole style. So, either way, change the feet/don't change the feet... it is a great looking figure regardless. I also agree that the ones on the bottom row show signs of warriors engaging in battle... and that is the point of the figures. You do amazing work, as you re well aware of. I guess I am saying that I see Parduz's point but understand why you drew her the way you did. |

Parduz, I agree with the male face.. easily tweaked.
I disagree with the female stance. It's girlish, and impish and elvish.
One of the reasons I like to post these images here is for feedback so thanks!
Just getting back at this tonight, but I also need to write. Oh the last dregs of the summer. Back to full time work on Tuesday!
It's funny, but I think I'm more productive when I work full time.

No furries, no anthropomorphic line, please!!! Okumarts. You already have so many beautiful lines to go into. Imho if you increase too much your lines you can't follow well all. Your wood elves are wonderful but, some sometimes, one set/series/line need some additional sets like characters ... If you want a new line why not pulp/steampunk/weir war/neo victorian, all in one, line? Anthropomorphic ? Naaa!!!!!!! ;D |
