I think this is feasible. In another thread, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/9520/steelcase-vt3-pingzauer-skin, I was thinking in print and came up with a concept. In the thread Onager Question, cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/thread/8164/onager-question?page=2, squirmydad's trailer was used for my hitch project. I see the tread unit being the back treads for this trailer. squirmydad also did the Longhauler for Papercuts 2015, onemonk.com/pc2015-dl.html , based on the Convoy vehicles. Punkrabbitt started work on an Onager Longhauler a while back, but he was using the Convoy cab and Onager tracks. I hope to be able to cobble these ideas together, similar to the image above, and have a unique kitbash of a couple other kitbashes of Christopher Roe's outstanding Onager model The image above has the tractor extended by one wheel. I'm going to have to play with things. I think the stretched tracks looks less truck-like and more train-like. I'm going to play with the files and try to get it to work with the standard tracks. I think that if I lose the strip between the door and the sleeper unit, the geometry will work without a major overhaul. For the trailer, I want to do three trailers -- an Onager-style trailer as shown above, a traditional box transport trailer on tracks, and then the requested flatbed. I think it is all do-able, but only if I shelve a bunch of other projects and work solely on this EDIT-- I also want to do a couple versions using Christopher Roe textures, but not all of them, and I want a smooth-skinned version, but keep the panel lines (per woosh and myself) Unlike most of the Genet models, you can't just pull off the outlines and create a new file. I've tried this on a couple versions without success. I'll try a couple others, but I might have to overdraw some of the lines, or be very good at deleting the textures. Time will tell Another Edit-- I think standard tracks should work

something you may have overlooked, a tracked vehicle turns best with both its tracks going in opposite directions, and so i believe you should redo the cab design so that the trailer's 5th wheel hitch is in the middle of the onager chassis. this would make for a more interesting design anyway i think. remember you can use the sandmaster's sections as well! i am also willing to post the sandmaters's custom tracks jpg if youd like them. i prefer the mbt's tracks over the onager's for detail and that they look much more all-terrain. i will say, cutting out the actual tracks for them were a PAIN because i had to cut the edges to be almost two full sets of mbt tracks.(i had to shorten them, but i think i may have made them smaller than i needed) cardboard-warriors.proboards.com/attachment/download/2732

I'll leave that one up to you. Especially since most tracked vehicles have tow hooks to begin with. Maybe more efficient, but this is a kitbash, not a re-design

That looks awesome! Love the idea of an Onager with a trailer, you have peaked my interest lol!

It has been years since I traveled with my uncle in his semi, but in his truck, the engine went way back into the cab. To get into the sleeper, you actually had to stand on the in-cab engine cover. I picture this as being a mid-engine design with the engine extending from the rear of the sleeper unit into the cab between the seats. I don't have much room for power in this, so that is how I envision it. That, or possibly across the vehicle under the sleeper.

I'm using the 'white' onager for the wip. With Christopher Roe's white models, they still have texture, and I want it to be pretty clean. Got most of the tractor cleaned up before realizing I didn't need to clean up the parts that aren't being used. Oops. Once I get the kitbash to work on this one, I'll pull the outline to lay over the other Onagers to be able to get them in the other Ebbles/Genet schemes

Nice, sounds like it's at least cooperating with you so far! Also that's about how I would envision the engine to be as well, great thing about sci-fi is it can work about anyway you want lol.

Running into some issues with the rear panel for the sleeper and trailer. I was trying to get a clean single-color version, so I could delete the color and have a template to lay over Christopher Roe's other Onagers, to have several versions. That rear door isn't cooperating at all. Not happy with any of my attempts, but I have a couple other ideas to try on it. Here's where I am at for the tractor, with special thanks to squirmydad for his fifth wheel. I'm not even going to show the sleeper and trailer parts ...

i just realized i made something similar to this in gmod. i used the tracks for an i-s7 heavy russian tank, the cab and engine from an maz tractor, and the personnel compartment from another big russian truck. it is very wip and unfinished, but i may add more to it some day.
you may recognize some css props, eli from hl2, and some lost planet mechs in the interior. i had to really scale-down the trucks themselves so that id be able to run around with it in small places, but this meant that i had to SUPER-scale down the stuff inside it. i will get screenshots.

Well, the door looks much better on my workpage. Since I am going to have to do the extended cargo area for the trailer, I am doing the whole shell, then I will shorten for the sleeper, and extend for the trailer. Not done with it, but got much further this time around, and all the tricky parts are done. I also tested the pages, using the Select Color tool, deleted the bluish white and pasted on various Ebbles Onagers and my concept looks like it will work well To make things easier on me for all the possibilities, I used the lower skirts of the gray version, which looks good on all the Ebbles textured cargo areas except the black one. I would have been ticked off at myself, if I would have had to shelve this just because of the rear cargo door EDIT-- Workpage done!

I could either vacuum or finish the sleeper. Sleeper wins! Maybe this would be a good time to explain why I went with this color. As I was thinking of this as a 'white' build, white is sometimes hard to deal with as far as leaving those little dots that are hard to deal with ... artifacts. This greyish blue white gives a little flexibility. It is easy to spot potential artifacts before they are in the final page. The few artifacts that do sneak through will be more grey than stark white, so will not be as noticeable. They will also be next to shadow areas, also making them less noticeable. When I did my test earlier, I didn't see any artifact issues, but I checked it out at 100 dpi, not 400.

I was going to start work on the trailer tonight, then a thought occurred to me ... do I need to redesign the reinforcers? Ach.
I don't think I'm going to have room to have the trailer quite as long and still fit on the page. Well maybe. If I have the end caps separate, it could possibly fit. We'll see
When I do a test build, does anyone have a preference for the Ebbles texture used? I was thinking about doing the Police Tactical Blue for the cab and white for the trailer

I'm cool with any size trailer, lol. Also I think any texture for the test build will look awesome, I like them all lol!

I almost decided on a rather stupid idea that I am sure to mess up -- I found a chrome texture I am itching to find a use for, but I know I'd never get it to look correct. I was going to try it on the cab. I better not get too experimental
Getting the trailer tracks cleaned up is more problematic than I thought

Hahaha, sounds kinda like me when I'm playing around with a model idea, I keep finding textures I really like and wanna try.

Well, as I said, my kitbash of squirmydad's Onager trailer tracks was problematic. It had some issues that hardly showed that I fixed, and then there were all those itty bitty areas that had to be turned monochrome. And the artifacts were more of a pain on this, but got it done. The trailer tracks file will be offered by me, only in tan, OAP blue, grey and this monochrome texture file. It requires laying this template over texture files, only my original file was in the tan. I have two Ebbles texture sheets I made up already, including the OAP blue, but I will do one in grey, since I am using the grey side skirts. Taking this file, you can delete the bluish-grey white areas and put whatever texture you want in there. I still plan on doing a Steelcase one-off. I might change out the drive wheels to chrome semi rims and use the chrome texture as trim. You know truckers and their trucks EDIT -- Oops. To do the blue cab/white trailer, I will also have to create an Ebbles White texture pallet. Double oops. For the Onager Longhauler trailer, I will need to steal squirmydad's Onager Trailer front end, delete the texture and add it to the Onager Longhauler Trailer file. I think building will have to wait until tomorrow. Unless things move faster than I anticipate. I did take a Sherlock break while the laptop batteries were recharging, but not fully recharged

They are all from Christopher Roe models. I believe in keeping kitbashes looking like the original designer may have done it - except when I go a bit bonkers. Like on the Onager Trailer Hitch. It used Chris's textures on the hitch mounting boxes and used a kitbash from one of his other models to make the hitch for the Onager. BTW, did the Ebbles White texture file and the Ebbles White Trailer Tracks

Sweet, so texture wise they will fit right in with Mel's Models then! It's probably just me then, for some reason the colors in the previews seemed brighter lol.

They shouldn't. When I did the Police Tactical, I first did the OAP Blue Texture sheet. But when I printed the first page, it was too dark, so I brightened it up and made a SWAT Blue sheet. Before the laptop battery died again, I moved my trailer back end and squirmydad's trailer front end to Sleeper page. Got it cleaned up and placed the rivets back on it, using my own method for keeping them uniform. I haven't checked whether all the lines line up, but here's where I am stopping for the day. Note to self. Re-work the OAP pg 3 sheet with the new format

I am going to rework the back end of the sleeper after work. It doesn't need a gigantic cargo door. I also need to fix the skirts that I messed up accidently while cleaning up the front end of the trailer. I'll probably fix that during lunch, make the Onager Trailer box, and do the Ebbles Tan texture file. Quick things. The sleeper back end is going to require some thought. My, oh, my! Cleaning up the artifacts on that front end resulted in major damage to the sleeper. Maybe I should just concentrate on fixing the broken stuff before doing the other stuff EDIT-- Well, thank goodness I show progress in these threads. Up above I had a clean image of the sleeper unit, so I just pasted it in. Got the Ebbles Tan texture file done and got the trailer box done. 40 minutes well spent, and I even made a work phone call and ate. Now I need to figure out what to do with the back of the sleeper... Used squirmydad's Longhauler base for the bottom of this. Decided to do Ebbles Tan for my test build. I call it a test build, but Christopher Roe did the geometry and I have been very careful not to mess that up (more careful with the geometry than the textures evidently). By doing the tan version, I can compare it to my concept image and see how close it is. Should be pretty close. Still have to figure out what I am doing with the back of the sleeper, though EDIT -- Too busy?

That's looking awesome can't wait to build one, it's just asking for cut files too lol. Also you answered a question I just thought of today, having an Onager with multiple trailers lol. Made a work phone call, now you really are working too hard, lmao!

Well, a work call while I was on my lunch hour ... squirmydad, can we have your flatbed posted here? It's yours, and I see nothing that needs modified, other than placing the hitch pin on the trailer bed file. Actually, it may make more sense to put it on the tracks files. There's plenty of space and you can't do an Onager trailer without Onager tracks, right? I also planned on using your flatbed sides and base for the bottom of the box trailer. I haven't decided on whether to start building tonight or do the box trailer. Maybe a little of both. EDIT -- Going to do a bit more customizing of the files. Headlights and side markers from the LaGanne Hess tug is part of it. The Onager's headlights don't seem all that bright for off-roading.

Evidently, somehow I saved the SWAT Blue under the name 'OAP Blue'. I should probably rebuild the OAP texture file... BTW -- when I mentioned adding some touches to the files, here's what I did
