Can't wait to see some pics Squirmydad. My daughter came by as I was sketching mastheads, and she copied one, (the Oseberg dog/dragon) but she put flowers and a big bow-tie on it. It's still on my drawing table, but I didn't scan that one.... As for shields...I think you're on your own. But a clever felllow might peruse the following gallery and do a little cutting and pasting.... www.flickr.com/search/?ss=2&w=all&q=viking+shield&m=textFlickr is a pretty good resource for...ahem...research... And here's the extension part and the oar banks (with steering oar). dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/vik_01_extras.jpgdl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/vik_01_oars.jpgI made the outside gunwhales of the extension separate, so it would be easier lining things up. The oar banks fold down the middle and slip over the gunwhales (folding the oars up). They may need a little reinforcing with an extra layer or two of cardstock. Or maybe a few strips under the little folds. A little bluetac should hold the edges down. The steering oar shouldn't be glued below the gunwhale line, that way it can be slipped over the gunwhale. Then fold down the handle. It goes on the right...hence the word starboard...steer-board. (and port is the side that you dock on...the left side...so you don't break your steerboard...) You might want to colour the underside of the oars and the steering oar with black or brown marker. Next stop...dragons and monsters... Shawn

Thanks for the pics Goas!
It's cool to see it put together.
Shawn.

Any plans to do an extra mid-section to do extensions, oar banks, wolf and dragon heads, or shields for the gunnels?
Plans...? Yes. Time...? Uh....maybe.... Shawn

OK, here's the first hull textured (well, half a hull). dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/Viking%20half%20hull%20jp.jpgI haven't printed it yet so I can't tell if its too dark (no ink). It should be fairly straightforward to put together. Glue the outside gunwhales to the outside of the inside gunwhales. Fold the bow tabs out, and glue the bow ends together (the white parts), then fold the tabs under the hull, fit the deck and glue. Make two halfs the same way, then slide them together to make the length of boat you want. The mast and sails and steering oar are coming next...soon I hope. And I'm probably going to add some nautical detailing at some point...and some funky viking dragon head thingies... Hope you like, Shawn

Sorry, I don't have any pics of the fort. I did a test way back when I made it, but it's long gone.
Maybe Goas will post some pics when he's got it made....please...?

@goas
My original idea was to cut out a window slot at eye level at about every third or fourth stake. Or to cut the odd stake down to make spaces.

Thanks Squirmydad, it's kinda cool to know that someone (other than myself) actually built something I did. The viking ships I did were only in the test build phase. I'd done a couple of builds, but those are long gone (and unfortunately no photos). I reprinted the tests and made a couple up, hopefully I'll share some photos tomorrow...made a few modifications and hoping to get them skinned sometime over the next few days. They're fairly simple builds, kinda like the Jollyboat I did way back, but bigger...and a little quicker to go together. Here's the squid and jollyboat file, if anyone wants to get the general idea...the viking ships should turn out similar...but better (of course!). dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/Giant_Squid_and_Jollyboat.pdf(btw, there's a longship and a knarr...and I'm thinking it might be fairly simple to shrink and modify one of the longship tests into a faering)

Here's an old file that I started for an MMIP project, but didn't finish it in time. It's done now though, so I thought I'd post it here. It's a wooden mound fort, suitable for Vikings, Dark Ages, or maybe even a Western setting. dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/Wooden%20Fort.pdfI've got some more "old stuff" to put up. Some buildings and a couple of viking ships. Hope you like them, Shawn
