I've started working on a modular set that could be used as Laketown from The Hobbit. The idea is 3 parts. 1. Docks: piers, ramps, platforms, bridges....the base for the town. 2. Buildings: a number of different sized, Norse styled building. 3. Boats: several large and small boats...again Norse/Viking inspired. Here's a little goofing around I've done on sketchup... laketown001_a by grendels_mother64, on Flickr I dunno how quick this is gonna come, hopefully I'll have time to put this up in dribs and drabs... I guess it depends on the size. You can cheat a bit with a really big ship (like WWG's Maiden) and make your below decks above the waterline, but any small or midsize ship putting the below decks above water will distort the model too much. I think you guys have come up with the best compromise: Model for the deck (and maybe one below deck) and maps for anything lower down. I'm in the middle of doing a midsized schooner (the Hispaniola from Treasure Island....its a little promo piece for a play I'm involved in). No below decks though...too much work. I had a hard enough time figuring out the deck profile given the hull angles. Maybe I should start using some actual 3D software. Shawn

Oops. Ignore that last one...I have no idea what that file is...? Here's the birch-bark canoe: [Removing broken link; canoe is available in Hoard #93] Shawn

Here's the birch bark canoe. [Removing broken link; canoe is available in Hoard #93] It's a bit of a funny shape, but it will fit at least 2-3 figures with round or hex bases (25mm). I know it's not a forest creature...but it was made by a forest denizen, and it was once a forest plant... Hope you like, Shawn (I'll put up some build pics when I get a chance to take some)

Nice Cyclops. Cyclopses...? Cyclopsi...?
I'm still thinking about a Sasquatch, but in the meantime I've got a birch-bark canoe that's just about ready to put up. Not exactly a forest creature...but a few forest creatures could go for a ride in it...

Those are incredible, eddnic. But I have to say that I won't be making them anytime soon.
Between the meaty fingers and the unsteady shaking, 5 mm is about the smallest part these mitts of mine can possibly handle...on a good day.
Still, I'm very impressed with your stuff.
Shawn.

Yeah, the back axle is attached to the back of the frame, not underneath. That way the wheels sit relatively even on the ground.
The outside bits of the driver's perch are separate, but the outside bits of the luggage rack fold back over (along the line that looks like a zipper...it's suppose to be a chain). Neither are coloured underneath. (a red or back marker would work). And the driver's perch has a little footrest board (red side folded under) that can be angled up a bit for looks...or folded flat to allow a figure to stand there.
Hope that all makes sense.
Would be great to see some photos posted if anybody makes one.
Thanks, Shawn.

Nice work Gilius. I'm definitely not ready to share any of my figures yet. I'm much better at building boxes. And yeah, an extension would be good, because this is all the time I've got for this for the next 3 days, and I don't have the labels and instructions on the stagecoach. Here's the finished art (ready to be put together if you're adventurous enough to try without instructions or parts labeled) dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/StageCoach_LIGHT.jpgTest build: dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/west_test02.JPGI haven't got time for a build right now, but it goes together pretty much like the test build pic. (the back rack is bigger, and the driver's perch is a little different) The frame under the cab is the long flat yellow rectangular box (with a big white area where you glue the cab). The axles are triangular cross-sections(with tabs to match the inside of the wheels). The rear axle glues to the back edge of the frame, and the front axle (small wheels) glues underneath near the front. Hopefully, it'll end up looking just a little bit like this: www.flickr.com/photos/jerrbo/5573570161/sizes/l/in/photostreamAnyway, I should be able to put some labels and instructions on this weekend...and actually build one. Shawn.

So here's a bit of fooling around with the stagecoach rendering. It's just doodling at this point, trying to figure out how I'm gonna texture the thing. I kinda like this look. With a little clean up it'll probably turn out close to this. dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/stage-rend-t.jpgShawn

Hey Dave, what about something like this photo for your spoke texturing: www.kickstandalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/WWII.jpgObviously not using a motorcycle wheel, but with the idea that you can see the ground between the spokes. Pick a fairly neutral texture (dirty track), blur the focus a little, add a shadow approximately below the wagon body... If you think of the angle this is going to be viewed at (on the tabletop, from a high angle) it should be easy enough to fake-up. Whaddaya think? Shawn.

Hey Dave, It wouldn't take much to open that cockpit up and make it big enough to fit a 28+ figure or two.
A little bigger scale just as it is would make for great set decoration for a hanger or landing strip scenario...

Thanks Dave, but nah...
Not worth the headaches, plus I only do this stuff when I get inspired...otherwise its no fun.
I really like your stuff Dave, I think its even better than WW. They're stuff is good, but sometimes little uneven. Your texturing is top notch.
Plus your layout skills are great...you didn't take graphic design somewhere did you?
And where the heck did you get that moldy roof texture?...it's just so comic bookish, but it looks perfect.
Anyway, thanks, Shawn

Here's a PDF of the whole thing (but you'll have to ask Squirmydad for the shields...and Quasimodo...) dl.dropbox.com/u/15163033/Viking_Ship01.pdfI'm gonna clean it up a bit at some point, if I do I'll repost the "official" version back here. Shawn

Wow, that looks great Squirmydad! Thanks for posting that. Yeah, I know the sail could be bigger, but that's about as big as you can go on one sheet of paper. With the mock-up I made, it looks better if you open the mast ring a bit and let the sail sit a bit lower on the mast. The other thing I was thinking is that you have to have some room below the sail for figures. But yeah...a bigger sail would look better. Plus I printed the sail on a bit lighter stock...some cover stock...so it wasn't too top heavy. Like the shields...maybe I should include some... Ah......the kraken!!!!!
