Oh I am loving the second version David! They could almost work as powered armour designs for space pirates too.....

Can I invite you to see Niklas Janson art and concepts for remakes of space games from the 8bit era? StarflightStar ControlMaster of OrionM.U.L.E.and othersI'm a big fan of Master of Orion, so insectoids (klackon) and bird-folk (alkari) are missing. Maybe dark robed figures too? Nikklas Janssen.....!?! I remember stumbling onto his blog 8 or 9 years ago....and was stunned by his easy cg sketching style. A man with some real talent (and a penchant for drawing women in battle armor and tight panties....). But what I just found out is that he's the man responsible for this wonderful classical image: Definitely a man worth taking some inspiration from. GM64

I came across Hydra Miniatures' retro sci-fi stuff the other day, and it made me drool for YOUR retro sci-fi things! My hands are too shaky to sculpt or paint any more, but I can still wield an X-acto! And it would cost about $100 to put together two opposing fleets of Hydra ships.
And as for insectoids, I would like to see some roach-men, who evolve on worlds where all other higher life forms were wiped out by nuclear war. Roach-men are not particularly ferocious, but they are in high demand in the fleets of all space faring species, because their high resistance to, indeed, their THRIVING in high radiation environments makes them the perfect stokers to work in the reactor compartments of star ships! I see the roach-men lounging around in overalls with engineer caps on and bandanas around their necks, with oil cans and shovels in their hands!
Have fun! Steve

Yeah. I think once this semester is finished and my moving situation is sorted out I will have more opportunity to focus on more sets. I will take a look see at what I already have done for the ship battle game and try to organize a few more play tests to iron out some issues. I like the idea of roach men. It sounds hilarious and scary at the same time.

And while we're talking about possible retro sci-fi characters, how about the Robo-Repos of the Intergalactic Credit Corporation!?!
If you want to see how I picture them, get hold of a copy of the Buck Rogers TV show, season one, episode seven, Unchained Woman. There's an unstoppable prison guard android who chases Buck through most of the show!
Have fun! Steve

I got a copy of the whole Buck Rogers TV series from Amazon for 15 bucks, and have been watching it.
I wouldn't classify the visuals as retro sci-fi because they are 1980, post "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Star Wars", but the story lines are DEFINITELY retro, and much better than the old movie serials.
I like the star fighter combat that makes up so much of each episode. The iconic image from the old newspaper dailies was a panel of Buck and Wilma flying around through the air using their personal rocket flying packs. The iconic image from the TV series is Buck and Wilma, each flying around space in his and her star fighter. The fighters are two-seaters, but they usually carry a single pilot, unless the plot line calls for them to be carrying a passenger.
PC versus Non-PC fighter combat should be pretty simple: non-PCs miss, PCs hit... Though PCs do sometimes take some non-lethal damage to advance the story line.
PC versus PC would be a little more complicated. "Silent Death" was my favorite star fighter rules.
I may do a more formal analysis after I've watched the whole series. The space combat has affinities to that of "Battlestar Galactica", since the shows had the same producer.
Have fun! Steve

I got the idea to use Space Patrol (Retrospace Set 1) as Good Guys figures in Patrol: Lost. They should go nice enough with Oversoul version of the tiles. The Space Patrol guy with a big ray gun (second in the upper row) is obviously Ranged Combat Specialist, any other three are regular Good Guys, but because they all carry the ray guns, there's no Close Combat Specialist! Can we please have a figure with a sword/knife or with no weapons at all, just standing in some martial arts pose? (For a moment I thought about using your Trek figures, but there's no Sulu with a sword either ) And then there's the problem of the Bad Guys - because they need to stack 6 high, tokens seem like the best solution, but I'm afraid of the visual clash...

The Roaches are an absolutely fantastic idea. how about the following:
-robot policemen and robot investigators? -futuristic bountyhunters some with animal heads (eg frogmen, gorillas and dogmen) -space monsters

Have you thought about using the Space Patrol guy #4 in the upper row as CC-Specialist? He has no weapon drawn... As for the Bad Guy tokens: Open the PDF with the Retro Space enemies of your liking (e.g. Imperiax or Space Pirates) in an image editing programm, create round/hex/square/whatever tokens as a new document, and then simply copy/paste "bust shots" of your favorite enemies onto those tokens. You could even use various of the mini images, since for the game the look of the bad guys makes no difference as long as they are from the same faction and clearly distinguishable from the good guys...

Malcolm Reynolds "What are you supposed to be?" "Space Cowboy." "One, there are no cows in space, and two, weren't you that like five years ago?" -from Castle

Has anyone been having issues opening the Space Pirates set? I have a customer who is opening it up and it's all just blobby and stuff... I wonder if it is his pdf reader.

Well, certainly I've downloaded all of your sets, and I'd have let you know if there was a problem... We're talking Set 6, right? I just downloaded it and it looks fine. I'm on Windows 7 running Acrobat v11.0.16 at home.

Yeah. I am not having any problems either. Not sure what the issue is. I'll direct the guy here and see if anyone more software savvy can assist them.

I just printed out and cut my very first paper flats - The Retro Space Invaders set, and they are firkin' awesome! If you happen to be kicking around design ideas, then a few Morbo-esque ("This Island Earth" 1955) guys might be a nice addition.
