Right - I'm dying at the moment, due to suffering from severe hayfever (yes, it is early in the year isn't it? But I normally start sometime in February, so it's quite good for me. No, it's not just grass pollen, tree pollen starts appearing in Feb/March. I'm not getting much sleep and I've got a weepy eye so by the time I get home after looking at a PC screen all day I don't want to do it at night). ANYWAY - this is just *another* excuse for not making progress on the Dungeon Tiles. But fear not - I have a *tiny* bit of free space this week (Thursday Night) so I'm going to finish off the doors and get them uploaded to PapermakeIT then. Unless something awful happens... After that, I want to do something for the March Hoard - like that Elf Commander I started on. DaveA

Well I've got some tiles mounted to foamcore and they look AMAZING. All I gotta do now is finish mounting the 50+ I printed out and finding a way to protect the tiles. I've got an acrylic spray that should help, but I am also thinking of trying those stick on laminates you use for lining shelves.

Although we have rolls of stuff we call 'Sticky backed plastic' here in the UK. Maybe that's the same stuff. I guess you'd want to laminate the tiles BEFORE you cut them to size... ;D ;D I don't have to do anything with mine. The laser printer I use at work uses a sort of 'wax' toner. So the finish is sort of plasticky anyway. And the colours are GORGEOUS!! ;D ;D DaveA

Yeah I think thats the same, and I can use the tile to cut the plastic to the shape of the tile, so I should be able to apply it after cutting. I'll experiment after payday.
If/when I get a bunch assembled, I will take pics.

If you're using clear plastic shelf-liner to laminate your tiles, and the liner comes on rolls, cut pieces a little larger than the tiles before trying to apply then. If you cut the pieces to the exact size of the tile, it can be a real bear to get them lined up right once you've peeled the backing off. You can always trim away any excess material afterwards with your trusty Exacto #11 blade!
Have fun! Steve

OK the door PDFs are done... but for some reason they are HUGE files. One of them is over 4MB. I've no idea why they have ended up this size. I'm going to try and reduce the size before I upload them to PapermakeIT.

The only thing I'd ask for now ,is the super organized mega bundle with everything in one handy download file. I have so many duplicates, and am still unsure what I have or don't have. You made a ton of stuff dude. JIM

Well, I just zipped all the PDFs up and it came to 41MB. I'll check out PaperMakeIT and see how big the 'large' files go. But That's HUGE!!! Downloading's going to be a PAIN on dial up... DaveA

DaveA Dave- How many files are there in total? I count 25, and it only came to 38 MB before zipping. I ran all the pdfs through Photoshop (open at 300dpi) and saved them again but used jpeg encoding instead of zip (it's better, really!) and the files came in at 32MB - 28MB zipped. I'll try making a booklet in Acrobat after lunch and that may compress it even more since there is a lot of redundant imagery in the files.

Squirmydad
Yeah - Inkscape conversion to PDF is probably not as efficient as Acrobat. It would be great if you could have a go at condensing the zip file.

Woah... Forgot about this thread. those are nice.
Another thing that you can do when you convert it to jpeg is not to save it at 100%. Try saving it around 85%. Since it is 300dpi resolution, it does save on file size alot. I started doing that with my files to save on file size before I convert it to pdf.

Hey agelessone! Sorry I didn't reply earlier! Squirmy was having a go at creating a sinlge download file for the basic squares. Since I use Linux, the flexibility of the PDF creation software is not as good as on Linux. moloch: Incidentally, I saved most of the jpg's as 150dpi PNGs, then converted them to 85% JPGs. A couple of the more data-rich images were reduced to 65% JPGs, so the images are as small as possible, without actually making them lose too much quality (at least to my own eyes). DaveA

The booklet only compressed to 27MB, zipping it up further only saved a couple KB. I tried reducing it further within Acrobat and it crashed every time so something in there is maxing out my processor. Eric

@squirmy: Thanks for trying Eric! I'll maybe have a go at work too. agelessone: Everything I've produced so far is up one PapermakeIT. I had some plans to do other stuff, but never got around to it. I was hoping Floydski's Encounter Sets would take off. The stuff he's done for that is amazing!! DaveA

Hi Agelssone
Sorry for the delay. The dungeon squares were done at 150 dpi.

Thanks Tonsha,
I am currently developing a skirmish level game (Battles in the Labyrinths of Hell type of scenarios) and have someone developing tiles representing the twisting labyrinth.
The tiles are 6x6 and we have a lot of variants but my main question is print quality. Some say 300 DPI, some say 200(which I was leaning towards since at that scale the 300Dpi is kinda irrelevant
..yours looks awesome printed out
What are your thoughts on the resolution for printing purposes.

I played around with dpi & jpg quality to try and get the best compromise between print quality and download size.
But to be honest, Jim pretty much nailed it. 144-150 dpi is perfectly acceptable. You've got to remember that you'll be viewing these from around a foot or two away from the actual print. Hold them at arms length and decide. Viewing them on-screen and 300% zoom is not a real experience.
As far as jpg quality goes, 40-50% quality is good and gets the file size way down. And the simpler the texture, the lower the quality can be. maybe as low as 20%.

These are looking excellent. I keep musing the idea of making square tiles, but then I get all confused about having the doors as part of the design and so on. I'm a fan of stand up doors - really adds a level of 3D when there's no walls.

Yep, go right ahead, I don't own the rights to the art anymore. I'm sure Nik won't care too much either, as long as they are not for sale. JIM

I really hate to be "that guy" who necroposts a topic who's last activity was four years ago but I was wondering if these tiles are still available for download anywhere? It seems the links I've seen through the thread are dead, or at least dead to me. Thanks.
