oldschooldm, I'll see about getting a quick pictorial put together to help with the 3D ramp supports , since I'm guessing those were the ones that caused the most issues? Yup. I think at least on interior-cut line should have been a fold, and one was also missing, but I can't be sure without building and/or instructions. We can go over details in PM when I get to building these, probably tomorrow.

<start rant not aimed at anyone in particular> I'm always fascinated by how we separate "2D" from "3D" so discreetly, when all of the models we build, even flat ones, are strictly 3D. Not to be too pedantic, but how many "D" is this model: I think it's about 2.5D or so. :-) Made of completely flat parts that hold each other up on a table. I use flat (2.1D?) backdrops all the time, especially for photos, but need to add extra "D" support to hold it up during use. When I think of getting close to 2.0D, I don't think backdrops (which stand up, so you can look around them and want to go into them), but maps - which are on a plane that it's hard to penetrate or get behind/go inside. This is pretty flat: Or is it? But, it is a backdrop! Now, honestly, I don't care about what fraction between 2- and 3D a model is. It's pretty meaningless as a number. It seems each model has a range of purposes - and I'm really excited to see everyone testing the limits of the form. :-) </end rant> I would LOVE it if someone started making large-format (multi-page) backdrops for play-time terrain settings - such as a town, a Forrest, a mountain range, etc. I'd buy every single one and build them immediately. Don't care what D it is, but should store-flat! PS: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal_dimension www.math.hmc.edu/funfacts/ffiles/10008.2.shtml www.mu6.com/riemann_space.html

BTW berneart76 - do you already have cutfiles for these pages? If not, I'll make them later tonight...

eran and @bearneart76 - I can see much of what it is right off the bat when they load: all of the texture options are full-page highres textures. The shapes, including all the "white" space around them is being painted on in a layer. This makes it easy on the artist, but bloats the image files a lot (normally, if the white were on every texture layer, it would all compress out.) I'm betting the pros here can help a new guy out with this little problem... Eh, jjensen, Dave, squirmydad, etc.?

I'm in. This forum (more properly, it's community) was a big part of my adopting this hobby at a time in my life when I needed to enjoy something for myself (life was pretty crappy, as many of you know...) SquirmyDad was a part of that, and then stepped up even further when the original founders wanted to move on. He's refused direct financial support for things like storage fees, so I'm happy to be able to help replace the defective equipment. This is WAY better investment than several of the kickstarters I've backed before... :-)

So! Who's next to submit a staircase? I've got some free cycles this weekend to build and test!
Let me know if you have any questions either by posting to these threads, or send me a PM.

Um . . . you're sure you're not obsessed, right? Looks Awesome! When you make a new set of cutfiles for an old set, there's a bit of you that always wants to make sure it's all OK - and that means a full test build. I don't always do that (or you end up with, like, 25 portals or something when most people need like, 1 or two or MAYBE 3.) Now I've got a nearly infinite set of portals to populate my infinite staircase!

Also I think this is a great project. With a great potential. But if I have to define myself in a few words I would say that I am a compulsive paper minis collector more than a skilled cardboard models maker. So for me ( objectively the cost may be right ) a 120 $ pledge for the complete city diital files is a bit too expensive. Imho. Yup. Me too on the price-point. $25, $10, or $5 is good though. :-)

New video shows the creator explaining and demonstrating the system. Bumped my pledge to get the stretch rewards (including a new awesome looking blacksmith.)
The builds are more precise can sturdy than the typical fold-flat system. I'm intrigued and impressed more than I expected to be.

So - I went to my D&D Encounters at my FLGS last night. Because the season is about to change, and there is uncertainty if the rest of the group was going to continue on a different day of the week, I decided to write myself out of the campaign I was playing in (in a dramatic fashion.) I wanted to give the other players a little something to remember me by. They all know I'm a papercraft terrain guy, so I gave them each (including the DM) a prototype/test build of a Staircase from this set. What I didn't expect was that the DM would put them to immediate use in an encounter as a makeshift set of ruined buildings along the road. It was surprisingly effective.

DO NOT PRINT YOUR MODEL YET!
Many papercraft products do not contain registration marks - but you still have people like myself sharing cutfiles for them. These are instructions on how to add registration marks to your printouts in the perfect locations. In short, you print each page merged with it's cutfile in the Silhouette Studio application, and print from there.
--- Detailed Instructions ---
These instructions assume that you're starting with a PDF, that does not have the required registration marks to work with the cutter.
In order to get the registration marks in the correct place relative to the cutting lines in these files, you will need to print from within the Studio program itself after merging the artwork.
Step one: Get each model PDF page into individual PNG files, so Studio can read them. There are several choices of ways to do this. If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro, split and reformat the pages one at a time by choosing: Save As > Image > PNG. If you want to customize the layers (There are various texture options), you can print-to-PDF after selecting the layers. Then you still have to convert each PDF into a PNG. If you don't have Acrobat Pro, another means to move PDF -> PNG is using the GIMP editor. When you open a PDF with GIMP, you can specify which pages to import. Be sure to set the resolution to 300 DPI on the import dialog! Once it is open, save the page with a .PNG file (by typing in that suffix), no compression.
Now you need to merge the PNG files with their cutfiles to get the registration marks right when you print...
[The remaining instructions are specific for Studio 3.0.531ss]
Step two: Now you have PNG files for each page, start Studio and then open one of them (you won't see the PNG files by default in the open dialog, click the file-type pop-down and chose PNG to see them). Once you see the image on simulated carrier sheet, you may see it rotated 90-degrees (not fitting on the sheet), just click Portrait on the Page control to rotate the carrier sheet to match. Next choose Merge from the file menu and select the matching cutfile page. You should see red-lines overlaying the image, they probably won't align properly at first.
Step three: Align the image to the cutlines. Zoom in 3-4 times by clicking on the +-magnifier at the top of the screen. The lines are in the correct place, it is the image that needs to move to match. Click on the image (including white area) somewhere, and use the arrow keys to shift the image until it matches the cut lines. I'd save the cutfile at this point.
Step four: Print the file and cut! Choose the printing option from within Studio - either from the File menu or as the first option after clicking on the Cut icon at the top of Studio - it will include the registration marks from the cutfiles. Then you know the drill, mount to carrier sheet and cut then edge and assemble!
Have fun, and if you got these files from the Forums, please post a photo of your build! The thread I created is a great place to leave feedback and comments.

[Update 3/12/15: Added clear indicator that printed sheets should be inserted bottom-first to each cutfile.] This is a complete set of cutfiles for: EASY Sci-Fi PORTALS and MOD-KIT From PERMES It's late, but I got the cutfiles for this set done. Test builds maybe tomorrow. I added the ability to cutout each portals dimensional texture, and also provided a switch on the texture pages to cut out each portal shape at 110% so you can kitbash to replace the "dimension" in place... Sci-Fi Portals by Permes Cutfiles.zip (215.56 KB) Pictures later.

Something like this one perhaps?: Did anyone create cutfiles for this yet? I'm about to make a load of these for the Infinite Staircase and would appreciate them - or make them and share them myself. Whatever works. :-) OK. I'm on it.

Update: Source files moved to dropbox. The spreadsheet and this thread have been updated with links to the new home of the files. They have not changed since 2/27. This allows non-cardboard-warriors to contribute to the project. More designers! Yay! As a bonus, this returns some archive space to the board.

I'm not convinced either and won't go "whole hog" on an unproven designer/geometry model.
But, based on these photos, I decided to back this project at the same level that I might invest (purchase a model or two) in a new designer showing up on RPG now. As many of you know, I like to encourage new designers to explore their talents, at least a little bit. :-)
If you think of it this same way - consider the $5 or $10 backer level.
There's enough talent and ingenuity there to encourage a new entrant to our ranks.
Now we've just got to get the designer to sign up here. :-)
