It's a great likeness Cowboyland. I knew exactly who it was at first glance.
Hmmmm......now that you mention it, his car would be a relatively simple 3D project......

For my part.
• Are you interested in being a part of this? Yes
• How many of your existing sets would not be compliant? I have to say that most of my 3d stuff is already pretty close to "compliant".... Except for the European page size and the cutter registration marks.
• If the number is low, would you add this stamp (once it's designed and looks awesome) to all of your existing compliant sets? I would if you'd let us "freebie" guys in.....
• If the number is high, would you consider adjusting your old sets to bring them up to standard at some point? Might be difficult to do as many of my old stuff only exists in final PDF and JPG form.....many of the originals were lost 2 hard drive crashes ago.....
• Would you consider putting effort into ensuring that all of your future sets are compliant and get the stamp? Yes.
• If the answer to the last question is "no", I'd like to know what's putting you off and what would change your mind.

Those are all good questions Dave. But for the majority of Kickstarter projects I've seen, the answers they'd get would scare people away...and I think mostly needlessly. If the KS proposal had great answers to all those questions, then he's obviously an experienced businessman and he might as well go into business in a more traditional way than KS....less risk for him and likely a better return.
I think the point of KS is to take chances on folks that otherwise wouldn't be able to get a business started otherwise (because their answers to your questions wouldn't convince a bank or traditional investor....)
KS looks like it is designed for exactly these high risk types....less experience....but a passionate, cool idea just itching to find its way out.
And yeah...that makes it risky to backers....but that's the model of the enterprise.
If you're not willing to take risk, just buy your sets at RPGnow.....
Less exciting than being in the secret back room of the coolest new thing....but also less risky.....
Just my observations.
But like I've said, I've only been observing from the outside...Obviously Rhannon looks the guy to talk to here about jumping in...
But it sure looks like an exciting new world out there thru the intertubes........

Sounds like a simple buyer beware issue. Maybe it could be regulated more.....but part of the appeal is the direct "early funder" to "guy with a dream" angle...and putting a lot of rules and stipulations are going to scare away creators for the same reasons that scare them away from motor and brick operations...upfront risk.
Ratings sound like a good idea... but consider the average Ks campaign seems to be to fund a work that will take months or even a year or so to finish....you're not going to get ratings anytime soon. And I suspect anyone with a wildly successful KS campaign will be in a good positions to go a more traditional route for their next project....and keep more of the profits. So are you going to get any really useful ratings....anytime soon...?
And from a funder's viewpoint the risk is generally pretty small anyway...20....fifty bucks maybe? Even less if all you want to do is encourage someone's creativity and have a chance to buy in early.
Life's a risk. If you get your kicks taking a chance by sending some schmuck a few bucks who looks like he has a good idea....and you get burned...consider it a gambling entertainment expense. I mean real investing is really not much different...stocks go up and down with no control from you...and they don't have cool illustrations or the fun of communicating with some schmo who's really pumped to produce the next cool thing.
I'm curious....though....what percentage of Kickstarters are crapping out on their initial funders....? Is it really high enough to be a serious concern...? High enough to mandate insurance and crap like that...?
I like browsing the proposals....but I don't need any more stuff...so I haven't jumped in yet....

Can I invite you to see Niklas Janson art and concepts for remakes of space games from the 8bit era? StarflightStar ControlMaster of OrionM.U.L.E.and othersI'm a big fan of Master of Orion, so insectoids (klackon) and bird-folk (alkari) are missing. Maybe dark robed figures too? Nikklas Janssen.....!?! I remember stumbling onto his blog 8 or 9 years ago....and was stunned by his easy cg sketching style. A man with some real talent (and a penchant for drawing women in battle armor and tight panties....). But what I just found out is that he's the man responsible for this wonderful classical image: Definitely a man worth taking some inspiration from. GM64

You'll need a vector image editor (for the SVG files) that can export as pixel (BMP or Png). InkScape is pretty decent free program for this.
Another really good thing to do is make use of Youtube tutorials on SketchUp (and Gimp and InkScape).
Seriously....I spent half a day going over the first dozen or so SketchUp tutorials....and suddenly the whole program made much more sense and I found tons of much easier ways to do stuff I was trying.
I can't recommend watching (and playing along with) the tutorials highly enough.
It is the one detour from your creative process that you absolutely won't regret!

What process do you use to go from sketchup to your actual printed model? I've only used sketchup twice to model something, and I'm pretty sure I've gone and found the hardest ways to get something done. Sketchup is a great program, but there's a few add-ons to sketchup that really help. One is an unfolder....can't remember the name of it at the moment, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. The other is called "flight of ideas" svg exporter.....it does a better job than the unfolder of exporting flat object from sketchup to vector graphics and keep the size and scale. Another good sketchup add-on is the "make grid". I start with a 1 inch grid that's about 20" by 20" to start playing around. I also copy in some of the virtual figs I've already done to get an idea of scale as I work. If you start and finish on Sketchup with the final printed size you want, there's less chance of screwing up the scale. Then I export an SVG (or several separate SVG's of each part) and mess around in CorelDraw with the vector image....add tabs and interior parts and stuff (the unfolder will do tabs right in sketchup....but I don't like the way it does it....). All plain white shapes with black .15 inch line outlines. Then I export the outline page as a BMP, and paint in textures with CorelPHotoPaint or Gimp.... Then most of the time I'll import back into CorelDraw to do the page layout over top of the full page BMP(titles and instructions). Then export a final JPG or PDF to share.... If you keep all your pages 8.5x11, and start with actual size in sketchup....it makes things a lot smoother..... Hope that helps... GM64 Edit...if you look at the sketchup pic you can see the virtual figs and the 1" grid. The other thing to keep in mind is that you have to keep your separate parts separate for the unfold to work. For the sleigh, the body is one "group", and the runners is another. You can see them unfolded as two objects at the back of the pic. You can also see the shadow of my "scale monolith" that's just to the left of the image. It's just a big rectangle with figure heights and a real size scale written on the side for reference when I play around in Sketchup.....

This idea started before Christmas, but thanks to the Blizzard of '14, and 3 days snowed in, I've managed to get a little more done. The sleigh and reindeer should be ready for Lucky 113. I'll put up more as I finish it. GM64 Edit: (the figs are my virtual Serenity gals...used for scale help in sketchup.....) (maybe I'll do some Disney Frozen figs to go with it for the next hoard) And here's the artwork for the reindeer figs:

Hello All! Do you know what December 5th is.....? Krampusnacht! You know, Krampus.....the goat like demon who is the yang to Saint Nick's ying. Krampusnacht is the night Krampus comes to kick off the Yuletide season by leaving coal for the naughty boys and girls....or if they've been really naughty he stuffs them in a sack and beats them with birch switches....! He also likes to drink schnapps, harass young women, and grope pretty young mothers. So all hail Krampus, the Yule Lord! Krampus at WikipediaMaybe I should make a fig of him....? Happy Krampusnacht! Hmmmm. See, I always pictured River as the natural athlete. Simon mentions her as a dancer quite a few times in the series. And Summer Glau did have pretty muscular legs (both pretty and muscular....). And the fact that she often wore combat boots kinda emphasized that.
But I get where you're coming from too. Interesting...that two people can watch the same character and see something completely different. My biggest concern with making River was to get just a little of both the innocent and the "crazy killer woman" in her face...which I hope I achieved.
But on a more practical note, waifish is a little hard to achieve in small figures. If you make their limbs too skinny, they disappear when you print them. They have to have a certain cartoonish proportion to come off (in my opinion). I think that's why I like Dave Okum's figures so much....and DarkMook too. They really get that idea to work.
Thanks for the feedback,
GM64
Edit.....and don't duck.....Firefly/Serenity was the best space opera ever put on screen.....
