Well done all around on a fine looking model... I think I like the modded version the best.

She is "shaping" up to be quite the Elf... You are doing a really nice job on this design. And remember... imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Working in someone else's style sometimes helps you to work through problems, or come up with new ideas. Just keep drawing...the style will develop. A note, for making this a paper figure in the standard 28mm-30mm heroic scale. Subtle gradations, shading and highlights are not going to translate well. So you may want, from time to time, reduce and print out a test copy. Things to think about might be exaggeration of color and shadow. Simple is usually better. And high saturation and well delineated segments for major body areas. Great work, she is lovely. ~F

A Big DOH on me. I just now...literally 2 minutes ago stumbled upon the TIF file for the Kobolds here. I was waiting patiently for them to get released before I played with the color... I was wondering how people seemed to have them... I'll see if I can make something interesting Ab. ~Floyd ps. I've been so psyched to actually have these for use with ShadowFell. But now I gotta build some of the Hinterlands for the Waterfall and Cave area... sigh. There just isn't enough of me...or time.... What's the policy down under on cloning... I might consider a move?

Woah, nice work Ab.
But where did these Kobolds come from? I've got Keep on the Shadowfell (& the new book Dungeon Delve) waiting in the wings for some denizens with which to fill it out.
They look really good! And so does your "set pieces"... nice mix and they go together quite well. Denny would be happy to see these. You should send him a link.

I like the look of the more typical flat base design without the additional tab-height.
I've always folded mine over and used it as the glue tab on flat bases.

You ever play Fire Emblem? It is a comparable "Fantasy themed" tactics game in similar vein to Advanced Wars?
I have never played its sequel or subsequent GameCube release but I always wanted to try them.

Ha! Thanks...
Question is.. will the next Hoard(March) be Wizards? Casters or Fantasy?
I guess I could have given this figure an Alien head so he would have fit loosly into this months? he he

ps. I had considered entering an Alien Skinned Battle Car series 2 to the Feb. Forum Hoard. But that seemed to be stretching the theme a bit.

Following along with something more like the Wizard Fighter Gandalf was portrayed. I'd thought I'd give a go at a recolor and modificaiton of the wizard figure from the excellent new Dungeon Adventurers set. The back is finished and contains the cape continues the subtle folding that you see on the front corner and I put a magic symbol in its center. As you can see it's a rather extensive color and texture change. As well as modifications to the face, eyes and particularly the beard(which I kind of rushed since not that much detail will show on most printers anyway...but there is enough). Also some laster printers may have trouble distinguishing the subtle blue/purple detailing in the robe. I had to exaggerate that detail(brightness, contrast) when test printing. It looks real nice on a inkjet though. ~Floyd

I loved the original 2 games. I've not played the DS game since I do not own the DS...yet.... but yes the Core game is really fun. It's a nice mix of strategy, tactics, paper _rock_scissors with just enough element of chance thrown in to keep things interesting and not stale or static.
I saw some images of the new game coming out. Its a new design style...a bit more serious and gritty though not quite realistic. I kinda miss the old style...but as long as the game is intriging...

Ab those look great. Both the figures and your mini-Diorama set using CWU. I like the way OneMonks Dungeon Adventurers pop out of the realistic monotoned stone scenery like that. Good choice...
That really has me wanting to build small scenery pieces like that myself. And flesh it out with a bunch of props. (Crates, Barrels, Chests, etc.)

In photoshop (assuming you have the object on its own layer and not surrounded by a backgorund color). Just double click the object in the layers palette. And select Stroke from the popup menu. And then adjust the thickness. If you are getting a slight white edge on the inside of the line (between the figure and the stroke line), switch the method from outside to center.
In Illustrator, just select the vector line you wish to thicken and use the Stroke palette(under the Window menu at the top if you don't already have it on). by selecting the thickness desired.

I've printed the entire line of TerraForce Military, Hybrids and Zeroids at 15mm for use with GunCrawl and I thought they looked really great. The only thing I did different was print on 28-45lb paper instead of 110lb cardstock, simply for cutting ease. The models at this size are comparatively as stiff when glued as the 110lb cardstock. Here is a link to (some of the models) that I made (apologies if this is redundant). It is a slide show showing a game in progress of GunCrawl, but all the models are 15mm scale. ~F Office Rules!

Thanks OMB...I do have most of those. NT does a good job with them as they are all easily identifiable. Though I am not a big fan of hand drawn patterns. These also don't reduce to a usable state(without pulling out the last of the hair that remains on my head) at 3/4" of an inch. ~Floyd

Thanks to FNH for bringing this game to my attention! What is it? It's Advanced Wars( a GameboyAdvance & DS) turn-based strategy game recreated for the table top. The game is a work in progress and is currently in beta. With enough of the assets compiled and printed for playtest. The system provides for fairly fast play and a clever damage tracker for each unit without having to clutter the board with additional reference. It seems to be well on its way to capturing the unique feel and clever character of the digital version of this game. It can be found here at the Board Game Geek.. So go and join the discussion, download the beta game, print and play and then give them feedback. What a cool idea! And OneMonk could have a nice set of 2.5d figures, armour, trees, cities, etc. to be used instead of the flat prints mounted to tokens. I was really taken with this game when I first picked it up for my GBA. I loved the art style, the swift and easy gameplay with loads of tactics and strategy. Soooo.... as an exercise(or obsession)...I've started messing about with some 3d card stock tanks and models myself. UpdateBetter photo & 3 tank units designed. (Med & Light tank for Orange Army. And Med Tank for Green Army). New trees, surprisingly the circular trees are easier to build than the orignal pyramid designs I experimented with. New (simpler factory & green army mech & light infantry are also finished. Just not build. The grid is 1" squares to give you a sense of scale. And all of it is my own creation save the soldier carrying the RPG. Which is a 2d flat of the actual sprite. I plan to redraw them. 2 Tanks have been created the Med. & Light version for Orange Army. Right now I am designing different Hill/Mountains and Trees. And the Jeep, Rocket & Bomber. ~Floyd

I haven't tried some of the software listed here thanks for the heads up on some stuff that has fallen under my radar. That said...
I use:
Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator. Google Sketchup
I am in the field of Graphic Design & I also am a hobby photogrpaher so Photoshop serves a dual purpose. I've been using them since '95 for my design job.
I previously used Freehand and Corel Draw but there is nothing really new or different enough to warrant the $$ for redundant software. Besides, they stopped making Corel on the MAC at version 11.

What are you doing the figures in? Are you using something like Photoshop?
I can probably tell you how to do the borders in most software packages. There should be a Stroke or Outline command in there somethwere.

Fire Ruby Designs:
Wildfire v1.1 by Greg Saunders Wildfire Overkill(1st supplement) *15mm mod/scifi skirmish game
* an abstraction and can be played in 28mm just by doubling ranges. All else works the same. <--this info was provided in the Wildfire supplement. ----- magpiestear mentioned this game back in November(08) in the Looking for good 15mm Rules thread. ----- Typically this skirmish rule set sells for $14usd PDF but I just picked up the book and its supplement over at Wargamedownloads for $1.72USd each. This rules light(to medium-light) system has a really nice turn mechanic and basically everything is resolved using opposed die rolls. The system is provided as a virtual sandbox of mechanics without a lot of complexity. And players can complete games of small skirmish fire-teams pretty quick. An points based army builder is provided to stat out any figures you have. It provides an interesting take on the genre and I recommend everyone here to go grab a copy while it is dirt...cheap. I have not played it, only read the rules and all the reviews I could find. Reviews for Wildfire skirmish game can be found here: FictionalReality #31 March 2008 (Free online miniatures games magazine PDF) also a review on Songs of Blades and Heroes. RPGnet Review by Jason Kline Above Reviews Forum discussion providing more details about the system. ~Floyd

I am assuming you mean a black and white line drawing of a pattern.
Tracing by hand is the best way. Failing that...
The best way to ensure a good trace is to have a Crisp, clean lined black and white scan to work from of a desent resolution(300 at least). The bigger the scan is to work from, generally the better the trace will be. So if you could blow up the scan. Trace it then reduce it, you will probably net better results. [slightly technical description]
To make rough scan lines smooth (in Photoshop or the like) I give the entire image a slight gaussian blur. Maybe 1.3-3.5 pixels depending. Then you could adjust by hand 2 ways...the 1st is to bring up the Levels tool and bring the right most arrow in towards the center, and the left most arrow towards the center. This way you eliminate the rough areas and end up with a clean, smooth black line. The other way is to bring up the Unsharp Mask filter and set the amount to full(slide bar to right). And play with the Radius till you get the result you want.
For Trace Settings (I use Adobe Illustrator)... I use the [One Color Logo] default setting and change the path fitting tolerance to 1. And if needed the Corner Angle from 20 to say 10.
I can post illustrations of examples if this doesn't make alot of sense. Or if this was not what you were asking...sorry for dragging you through all of that.

I think he means you should decide a couple of teams of figures similar to those seen in that old show. Remember that one? Where each team is set in a junk yard and given 2 days to design and build something from what was available in the junkyard. I particularly liked the one episode where it was a group of military engineers vs. some Scottish? highland or maybe just English motorcycle family and they had to build hover crafts that could navigate both land and water. Guess who won? And guess whom had to go back in and rescue the team that started to sink? Lets just say the military minds may not always be the most capable of working with what they have on hand. Simple is almost always better.

I liked the SciFi power armoured squads that were available for that game. They were just too expensive for me to consider the purchase. Actually I think most of MicroTactix stuff was just a little too high, price wise. But I had tried the CompactCombat sampler game that was available for free. For quick and easy, fast play skirmish I'd recommend: Mutants and Deathray Guns (real cheap) Necromunda(it is free now) 5150 (solo/coop) - (fairly cheap) Combat Zone (fairly cheap) GunCrawl (solo / coop ) print and play complete system. For ones with a little more meat: StarGrunt II (it is now free) Infinity No Limits(free) Defiance

Yeah a church! Flying flying buttress and all? That's the only thing really missing from the free set.
I like the new & brighter palette. And the additional window protrusions add a nice feel to the quad-level structures above. You definiately have a niche. Most of the fantasy town sets out there have their main structures fit into this 6x?? squarish build shape. Where as you change the footprint and height quite a bit. It gives that nice dynamic clustered feel of early medieval towns.
A mill wheel (both water and grain) would be usefull too. Ground tiles, a Fountain or Well, a bridge, some "Ruined" options and alternate roofs and you'd have a set as complete as any out there.
~Floyd <---big fan of this set!

I've just started assembling a few fantasay warbands for use with Song of Blades and Heroes and Gold and Darkness.
